Congratulations to William D, LDANB-TAANB's Scholarship recipient. This month William will be attending the University of Moncton (Shippagan campus) to study electrical engineering. Best of luck!

The following is an English translation of an excerpt from our scholarship recipient’s essay, originally written in French. We are sharing only a portion of their essay; the original French excerpt is shared separately in our French-language post.

"My grandmother then decided to give me an assessment test to understand what explains my learning difficulties. She took me to the Allison Grandmaison Associates clinic with psychologist Lise Chiasson. For this evaluation, she paid $2,000. Today, I consider it the best gift she could have given me.

The results revealed dyslexia, verbal dyspraxia and dysorthographia disorder. From that moment on, everything changed for me. For the first time, I understood that I was not lazy or less intelligent than others. I was finally able to continue my academic journey by focusing on my strengths rather than my difficulties.

I learned to use my tools, to develop my autonomy, my self-confidence and strategies that allow me to move forward on my own as much as possible. Over time, I discovered that mathematics, physics and chemistry were among my greatest strengths."

« Ma grand-mère décide alors de me faire passer un test d’évaluation afin de comprendre ce qui explique mes difficultés d’apprentissage. Encoure aujourd’hui, je considère que c’est le plus beau cadeau qu’elle pouvait m’offrir.

Les résultats révèlent une dyslexie, une dyspraxie verbale et une trouble de dysorthographie. À partir de ce moment-là, tout change pour moi. Pour la première fois, je comprends que je ne suis pas paresseux ni moins intelligent que les autres. J’ai enfin pu continuer mon cheminement scolaire en me concentrant sur mes forces plutôt que sur mes difficultés.

J’ai appris à utiliser mes outils, à développer mon autonomie, ma confiance en moi et des stratégies qui me permettent d’avancer seul le plus possible. Ave les temps, j’ai découvert que les mathématiques, la physique et la chimie étaient parmi mes plus grandes forces. »

New Brunswick’s literacy measures tell us something important—but they don’t tell us the whole story.

This opinion piece looks at what can be missed in the data, particularly for students with learning disabilities, and asks an important question as Policy 322 is reviewed; Are we measuring whether students are actually receiving the supports they need and whether those supports are working?

Registration for our Barton Tutoring and French Tutoring programs opens August 17!

Our fall semester runs from September 14 to November 30 and includes 20 tutoring sessions.

💰 Cost: $32.50 per session
📝 New students: One-time $75 registration fee

Whether your child is continuing their learning journey with us or joining one of our tutoring programs for the first time, we’re looking forward to supporting students this fall! 💙
