Abundantly grateful to wear exquisite designs of Fashion Ikwe Designs & ANNE MULAIRE, two incredibly talented Métis designers featured in MMF Michif Language - La Lawng: Michif Peekishkwewin Conference.
This event was exciting with so many young stunning indigenous models who were just as beautiful on the inside & welcomed me with deep conversation, positive attitude, strong work ethic & professionalism.
It’s always an honour to get to see what 30 years between women looks like from my vantage point, remembering how it felt to have once been that girl with all those uncertainties & dreams, now all these seasons later, still dreamin’ big & getting to live it too in spite of stories that come up just to make things worth the challenge of overcoming yet again. I guess it’s a dance we do with life for as long as we are here.

And the catwalk is no joke yo! It reveals everything! There’s no hiding under all those lights & eyes. The specific blend of courage it takes to be seen & pride to show off an indigenous artists creations results in one powerfully humbling experience! We get one shot on this grand stage to go for it!

Some tricky things to navigate like turning in long trains while in heels, last minute wardrobe malfunctions (thank goodness for double-sided tape), unforeseeable surprises & quick-thinking solutions from team-oriented sisters there for each other. Perhaps part of me was overly focussed on “helping” ease someone else’s first time jitters & not slipping on my train that I stepped on HER train! Ooof! Here I’m thinking I’ve “arrived” as a seasoned pro & then mess up just before the finish line! Very grateful for Andréanne Dandeneau our fearless leader for her quick, chill & kind response & to Izzy Richard for her elegance, gentleness & beauty of spirit! The show must go on!

This is just the start of the trajectory for these young people & they are living symbols of the future to look forward to now! Give them a follow to show your support.

Three summers ago at age 50 I went to a wilderness retreat with no electricity or running water. I attended because I wanted to challenge myself to live beyond my comfort zone. Ironically, I had been in LA, Mecca of consumerism, just 24hrs prior, surrounded by the “beautiful people”. It’s enough to pull even the strongest soul back into the comparison trap. So when I was in this rustic setting, I decided that I would fully surrender this “ideal” self-identity that I had become attached to & allow myself to be stripped down bare. No showers, no make up, no mirror, just raw & natural. As with many women, due to societal pressures & self-imposed need for approval, it feels very vulnerable to have no mask to hide behind. On day 3 of sleeping in a tent with mice scurrying around, I met a beautiful former model who owns an agency. She asked me, “have you ever considered modeling?” I let out a scoffing chuckle of disbelief.
“Nope.” I answered but something in me screamed GO FOR IT! I’ve been booking fun, collaborative, creative jobs ever since!

Now this story is not to brag that I get to play professional dressup & meet cool creative people in fun locations (that’s the bonus & I’m very grateful), what I hope to convey is this; as I’ve learned to surrender the attachments to identity & the weight of mine & other people’s opinions, I came to know that I have always had “it”.

If that sounds arrogant let me put it to you this way: it’s in the letting go of the thing we believe we need in order to validate our value & to choose instead to see our inherent worth, that we end the separation from “it” & realize we had it all along.

By believing you aren’t “that” or you lack “this”, YOU keep it from you. When you let go of the want, you realize you HAVE.

Whatever that “it” is for you, it’s calling to you because it’s for you! Once we let go of the search for validation we step into conscious creation and that’s when the magic begins. We are here to express & experience life.

Summer of Self Love was designed to show you how to do this for yourself. You can HAVE the love you desire for yourself & it WILL look beautiful on you!

So this was one of the most magical Winnipeg Folk Fests I’ve attended. I had so many sacred encounters & deeply connected conversations with total strangers, sweat my ass off dancing with a bunch of youngins- we’re talking decades younger yet they held such respect for me & my right to occupy this same space.

I hugged a lot despite the heat, & was introduced to new music like Stephen Wilson Jr. (thanks for the tip Troy O’Brien). Turns out he’s a PK too. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a purdy exclusive club that one is usually born into & if you’re lucky you figure it out before it consumes you. Iykyk.

Scott was also really moved by SWJr’s music & sincerity of his performance. That’s him in the crowd with his guitar featuring the back of my head, photo by Scott.

Another group I’m part of is those who know the grief of losing a dad. A group i joined in ‘22 & Scott more recently.

Synchronistically, we met our friend Nereo II who just lost his father in law whom I also knew & admired, in the midst of the crowd while hearing “I Am My Father’s Son” we all talked about the sacred masculine & what a good father does for this earth.

I am also gratefully part of the exclusive group that got to have a good father who did his very best. Shout out David Reimer who was there with me assuring me everything was going to be okay. He told me as much in a dream recently as he turned to me when I called to him, his silver hair shining in a crowd a few steps ahead just out of reach.

Speaking of masculine power, the sun sure showed up hey? I thought I was playing it smart & taking all the precautions.

Still I got heat stroke so bad on Sunday evening that we left by 730 just after Billy Bragg. Not a bad final performer to hear as my closing act. I was honestly contemplating if this was my final curtain. I was throwing up & going unconscious at the same time and couldn’t control my heart rate or breathing. Scott had to help me to air conditioning and safety. I am not exaggerating when I say I felt as close to death as I ever have. (Except those other 2 times. Save those for another day.)

I ducked my head under the cold shower and had the sense about me to make a joke to Rachel Schappert when I spied her out of the corner of my eye, “I needed that baptism”. I knew she would get it. I think we even winked at each other at the recognition of the layered meaning.

In the car as I felt like I was falling backwards and zooming forward at the same time, I was pulled into a tunnel in my 3rd eye where I felt so peaceful. I have been pulled through this portal before so I knew the sensation and know to “ride it out” to what’s on the other side.

I might have surrendered my life right there to get out of that momentarily awful panicked feeling except “You Spin Me Right Round” was playing on the radio and the irony of it being by Dead or Alive felt like I was being presented with a choice in real time. So I chose that if it wasn’t Billy Bragg singing me info the afterlife with “Paint You a Picture” I wasn’t going to die right then.

I’m very grateful to Scott for being the man I have been able to count on all these years wherever our travels and our choices have taken us. He’s a rock and he took very good care of me as he sprung into action once I said, “hun, I don’t think I’m okay. Get me to safety.”

Feeling very grateful to be alive. Just in time to head out to to offer a ceremony/workshop about exactly this truth: that we are more than these bodies, these identities and these perceptions.

Once you experience the deathless death, you come back with a healed perception and everything you once thought mattered stops fooling you into anything other than the original baseline of deeply abiding inner peace.

You are not a body. You HAVE a body.

You are a divine being having a human experience.

You are a community of trillions of cells each with infinite intelligence and the spark of the Source consciousness.

I wish you the freedom this summer of losing the weight of other people’s perceptions, opinions and judgments.

I wish you self-kindness and acceptance of the beautiful woman you are and how you came to be.

I wish you all the fun in the sun that you’ve missed out on after years of withholding and strict self-discipline/self-punishment which only you can give it to yourself.

I wish you a love so deep and true for yourself that every dance floor, beach, pool party, bbq, festival and chance to celebrate life is one you take with no regrets, insecurities or apologies.
