Fire Prevention Week 2025, running from Oct. 5 to 11
This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” reminds us that safety begins with awareness and care. Fire safety is a shared responsibility rooted in protecting our families, our homes, and our lands for future generations.
Many everyday items—such as cell phones, tablets, power tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones, and toys—use lithium-ion batteries. If these batteries are damaged, overcharged, or improperly stored, they can overheat, cause a fire, or even explode. As part of Fire Prevention Week 2025, running from Oct. 5 to 11, Manitoba Municipal and Northern Relations encourages all Manitobans—especially those living in Indigenous and northern communities—to learn about the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.

For the safety of our children, Elders, and pets, these batteries should always be stored properly and handled with care.

Safe practices for lithium-ion batteries include:
Buy only approved products: Choose products with the *CSA approved* stamp or mark, showing they’ve been tested and certified to meet Canadian and North American safety standards.

Charge devices safely: Use the charger provided with the device, charge it on a hard (non-fabric) surface, and replace frayed or damaged chargers right away.

Recycle responsibly: Never throw lithium-ion batteries in household garbage or regular recycling bins. Bring them to a safe recycling location to prevent fires and protect the land. Find your nearest recycling site at https://recycleyourbatteries.ca/.

Resources and more information can be found at https://manitoba.ca/firepreventionweek/

It's our commitment to keeping our communities safe from fire. By learning together, we protect not only our homes but also the lands and stories that connect us all.
