๐ŸŽฏ Two high school students from Collรจge Sturgeon Heights Collegiate put their skills to the test at the Skills Canada National Competition in Toronto, Ontario from May 28 to 29, 2026.

๐Ÿฆบ โšกHuskies Kira Simpson (Workplace Safety) and Andrei Kargin (Electronics) were part of Team Manitobaโ€”a group of 64 high school, college, and young apprentices who earned the right to represent Manitoba after placing first in their respective trade or technology field at the Skills Manitoba Competition earlier this year.

๐Ÿฅˆ Andrei took home the silver medal in Electronics for all of Canada at the high school level.

๐Ÿ™Œ Congratulations to Kira and Andrei for representing Manitoba, SJASD, and CSHC! And thanks as well to Vocational Electrical Instructor Gary Yakimoski for his long-time support, advocacy, and mentorship of students and Skills.

๐Ÿงฃ At todayโ€™s Public Board Meeting, find out how the SJASD Indigenous Education Team is delivering Michif language learning to the Divisionโ€™s youngest students and a cohort of SJASD educators.

๐Ÿ“… Piikishkweetaak aan Michif! / Letโ€™s Speak Michif! kicked off in September 2025. Since then:

โžค All SJASD Kindergarten classrooms have been engaged in learning Michif. ๐Ÿ“–
โžค A cohort of 25 SJASD staff members have been taking Michif lessons and are integrating the language into their classrooms and schools. ๐Ÿ’ป

๐ŸŒฑ Next year, the Indigenous Education Team hope to grow the program to support Kindergarten students as they transition to Grade 1.

๐Ÿชถ Last Thursday, May 28, 2026, SJASD students, staff, caregivers, and community members gathered to dance, drum, and recognize the many Indigenous graduates at the annual Graduation Powwow.

โœจ The event kicked off with a pipe ceremony, followed by a community feast, a grand entry procession involving honoured guests, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, traditional singing and drumming, and individual recognition of students.

๐ŸŽ“ About 120 Indigenous graduates are receiving their diplomas this year from all five SJASD high schools.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ On June 4, 2026, St. James Collegiate students and staff ran a ceremonial lap with City Councillors Brian Mayes and Shawn Dobson to kickstart a track renewal project for the high school.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ The lap will be repeated once the rubberized track is completed in 2027.

๐Ÿ’ฐ SJASD Board Trustee Sandra Lethbridge co-announced the $800,000 project with the Councillors, which includes funding from the Division, City Councillor ward funds, and surplus City funds.

๐Ÿ… The new and improved 400-metre outdoor racing oval will enhance Physical Education infrastructure in the Division for students and staff, while benefiting the whole SJC community.

In Juneโ€™s Blurb from the Board, she provides a roundup of recent and upcoming exciting events within the Division, including:

โžค 72 out of 120 Indigenous graduates received their certificate of congratulations at the Divisional Powwow last week. ๐Ÿชถ
โžค June 7 is the PRIDE Parade, and SJASD is once again taking part. All are welcome. ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ
โžค 771 graduates will be crossing stages this month from SJASDโ€™s five high schools as well as the Stevenson-Britannia Adult Learning Centre. ๐ŸŽ“
โžค The St. James Scholarship Foundation is getting ready to provide approximately 63 awards to students across the Division. ๐Ÿ’ต๐Ÿงพ

๐Ÿ’… At tomorrowโ€™s Public Board Meeting, find out how John Taylor Collegiate is creating polished potential with their newly launched Nail Technology Vocational Program.

๐Ÿงด Since September 2025, 66 students from Grades 9 to 12 have been acquiring skills in nail technology through classroom learning and hands-on practice via the schoolโ€™s new Nail Tech Lab.

๐Ÿ’ผ Students enjoy deep learning experiences, as well as opportunities to establish pathways to career opportunities beyond high school, which includes pursuing Senior Years Technical-Vocational Programming and Accreditation through Apprenticeship Manitoba.
