In this case, our consultant had a consultation in the year 2025 with a student who had been refused a study permit close to two years prior and was looking for potential solutions.

We determined that the refusal was unreasonable and suggested a reconsideration. We did it in the year 2025 and, now, close to a year later, the client received good news that their study permit extension had been approved.

The client now can either apply for the work permit or a new study permit by getting admission at a DLI. Many doors have now been opened for the client who was out of status and looking to go back.

We look for solutions when none appears in sight. We strive to provide meaningful representation through effort and research, where all doors appear sealed shut in one's face.

Congratulations to the client on getting a second chance 3 years later after the last refusal.

There has now been an important development for those who received a Work Permit Support Letter under Manitobaโ€™s temporary public policy.

In this video, I discuss how the MPNP has started sending invitations to certain Support Letter recipients, and how a draw was held on May 7, 2026 for this group. Manitoba officially announced that all individuals who were issued a Support Letter will receive an Invitation to Apply, beginning with those approved between April 22 and June 30, 2025. The province also confirmed that these invitations would be sent to the email address provided in the Support Letter application.

The May 7, 2026 Expression of Interest Draw #270 then included a Temporary Public Policy to Facilitate Work Permits for Prospective Provincial Nominee Program Candidates category, with 429 Letters of Advice to Apply issued under that category.

This is a major update for workers in Manitoba who were relying on the public policy and waiting to see whether it would actually lead to nomination opportunities.

IRCC has now clarified an important point about restoration of status in Canada. Under the updated guidance, a person who lost status as a worker or student may also be able to apply for restoration as a temporary resident only, such as a visitor, instead of restoring back to worker or student status right away.

In this video, I discuss what this clarification means in practice and why it may be important for people who are out of status but still trying to remain in Canada lawfully while they assess their next options. IRCCโ€™s regular restoration guidance continues to say that restoration must generally be requested within 90 days, and applicants cannot work or study until status is restored and proper authorization is issued again.

This is an important policy development because it gives some applicants another possible pathway to remain in Canada legally, even where immediate restoration back to worker or student status may not be realistic.

There was a lot of attention around the recent TR to PR announcement, but for many people, it did not turn out to be much of an announcement at all.

In this video, I share my thoughts on why the update may have created more noise than clarity. Many applicants were hoping for something broader or more practical, but the actual details may not offer the kind of opportunity that people were expecting.

It is important to look beyond the headline and understand what has actually been announced, who may benefit, and who may still be left out.

In this video, I share my view on an important question many international graduates ask when planning their next move. Nova Scotia can be a good option in some cases, but it should not be treated as an easy backup plan just because someone studied in another province. Nova Scotia has made it clear that its nominee programs are focused on current labour market needs, limited nomination spaces, and candidates who show a genuine intention to live and settle in the province long term.

That means strategy matters. Nova Scotia continues to prioritize certain sectors and pathways, including areas tied to employer needs and priority occupations, while broader stream changes in 2026 have also been aimed at making selection more targeted and structured.

Before relocating, it is important to look at your occupation, your job prospects in Nova Scotia, and whether your profile actually fits what the province is selecting for right now.

In this video, I discuss an important question many workers in Manitoba are asking for 2026. As of now, the temporary Manitoba policy for prospective provincial nominee candidates was set to accept support letter requests only until December 15, 2025, and IRCC was set to accept applications under that temporary policy only until December 31, 2025. Manitoba also published a notice in December 2025 stating that new support letter applications would no longer be accepted after December 16, 2025. ()

At the same time, IRCC still has active federal guidance in 2026 for open work permits supported by letters from Manitoba or Yukon, which means the broader framework exists federally. But whether Manitoba will have a new or renewed WPSL policy in 2026 is still a separate question, and applicants should be careful not to assume that a 2025 temporary policy automatically continues into 2026 without a fresh provincial announcement.

This is why 2026 planning is so important for workers in Manitoba whose status or work authorization may be affected.

In this video, I discuss an important question for families trying to understand whether the spouse of a C-16 work permit holder may qualify for a spousal open work permit. Eligibility is not something that should be assumed. It depends on the specific work permit category, the facts of the case, and the requirements that apply at the time of the application.

Many people move forward based on incomplete information, which can lead to refusals or unnecessary complications. A proper review of the principal applicantโ€™s status and the spouseโ€™s eligibility is important before any application is submitted.

The April 28, 2026 Express Entry draw issued 2,000 invitations under the Canadian Experience Class, with a CRS cut-off score of 514. In this video, I discuss what this draw means for candidates and, more importantly, the next steps for those whose work permits are expiring. ()

For many applicants, getting an ITA is only part of the process. If your work permit is close to expiry, it is important to assess your options quickly and properly. Depending on the facts, this may include considering whether you can apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit or whether maintained status may help protect your ability to keep working while your next application is in process. IRCCโ€™s current guidance also reflects that interim work authorization support letters for certain workers on maintained status can now be valid for 365 days. ()

Timing matters, and missing the right step after an ITA can create serious issues even where permanent residence is moving forward.

Nova Scotia has made an important update to its PNP Expression of Interest system.

In this video, I discuss the recent change confirming that EOIs will now have a 12-month validity period effective May 1, 2026. Nova Scotia has also introduced transition measures for profiles already in the system. EOIs submitted before May 1, 2024 will be closed on May 1, 2026, while EOIs submitted between May 1, 2024 and April 30, 2026 will remain active until April 30, 2027 if they are not selected. For EOIs submitted on or after May 1, 2026, the profile will expire after 12 months if it is not selected. The province also clarified that closure or expiry of an EOI is not a refusal, and a new EOI may be submitted if the person still meets the eligibility requirements. ()

This is an important update for those relying on an active EOI under the Nova Scotia nominee system, especially because timing and profile validity can now directly affect strategy. ()

Important update on EOI validity and expiry timelines.

If you submitted your EOI on or after May 1, 2026, it will now only remain valid for 12 months. If not selected within that time, it will expire and be removed from the pool.

EOIs submitted before May 1, 2024 will be closed starting May 1, 2026 โ€” but this is not a refusal, and you can reapply if eligible.

For EOIs submitted between May 1, 2024 and April 30, 2026, no immediate action is required. These will remain active and expire in 2027 if not selected.

Understanding these timelines is critical to avoid losing your position in the pool.

IRCC appears to be refusing some PGWP extension applications for missing language test results, even though the IRCC website states that language results are not required in these cases.

In this video, I discuss why these refusals are concerning and how such decisions may be open to legal challenge. When an application is refused based on a requirement that does not appear to be supported by the published guidance, it raises serious questions about the reasonableness of the decision.

Applicants should not assume that every refusal is correct. In some cases, it may be important to review the refusal carefully and assess whether the decision can be challenged.
