Happy Mother's Day! the Mothers' Club, subsequently called The Hour-A-Day Study Club, was founded in 1934? The Mothers' Club was established in February 1934 by fifteen Black women from Windsor's McDougall Street Corridor. Members advocated for equitable access to education and challenged segregation in Ontario schools. Members also pledged to study for one hour each day and discussed topics of concern to the Black community. The Club hosted rallies to motivate Black students as well as lectures, high tea events, and luncheons showcasing Black excellence.

The Hour-A-Day Study Club is the longest running non-profit, Black female driven organization in Canada. Education has remained a primary focus for this organization. Each year the Hour-A-Day Study Club awards scholarships and bursaries to students who are descendants of the Underground Railroad to help pay for their post-secondary education. 2026 scholarship applications are now available at https://www.houradaystudyclub.org/ with a deadline of August 16th, 2026.

Ninety two years ago in February 1934, the first meeting of the Hour-A-Day Study Club was held at the home of Ardella Jacobs. To commemorate the anniversary, current members of the Club gathered at Almast Turkish and Mediterranean Cuisine for lunch and a monthly meeting. The Hour-A-Day Study Club is the longest running, non-profit, Black female-driven organization in Canada… and that’s worth celebrating!
