Highlights of more great learning opportunities at F.H. Collins.

As a part of the Yukon Fish Community of Practice speaker series, students from F.H. Collins Secondary School got the chance to step into leadership roles and shape the future of salmon stewardship in the Yukon.

Through The Gordon Foundation treaty simulation program, students in F.H.’s Indigenous Academy explored how Kwanlin Dün First Nation created an innovative youth-focused initiative that is centred on salmon stewardship, leadership, and governance.

The simulation gave students a chance to take part in treaty negotiations, learn about decision-making and see how different groups work together to manage fisheries. They explored cultural, political and environmental perspectives, and learned why collaboration is key to protecting salmon.

The F.H. Collins Indigenous Academy is a full-day, one semester program that provides Grade 10 students with an opportunity to learn experientially through Indigenous ways of knowing and doing.

A great story in Canadian Geographic highlighting Meera Sarin and the FH Social Justice Club.

Every Wednesday at lunch, a classroom at F.H. Collins Secondary School fills with students eager to make a difference.

From protecting Canadian wildlife to supporting global causes, the school’s Social Justice Club, guided by educator Meera Sarin, has become a hub for student-led action.

Recently featured in Canadian Geographic/Aga Khan Foundation Canada special issue, Meera and her students are being recognized for the powerful work happening right here in the Yukon.

With nearly 20 years of teaching experience, Meera has created a space where students connect local and global issues, build confidence, and turn ideas into real change. Whether it’s organizing community clean-ups along the Yukon River, installing fishing line receptacles to protect wildlife, or leading food drives that support neighbours in need, these students are making an impact locally and globally.

Through initiatives like Whitehorse Connects and global learning opportunities, students are not only giving back, but they’re also gaining a deeper understanding of the world around them and their role within it.

As Meera puts it, this work “lights students up.” And the impact lasts far beyond the classroom.
