weaving willow on Haida Gwaii Tamarack Teas & Twigs, is an emerging network for weaving workshops, outdoor education, and ardent foraging.

Weaving: Experimenting with designs, collecting native and non-native species to create vessels for future use has become a way to engage youth with the land in a direct and meaningful way. Taste Based Education: Children and youth workshops that guide students through inquiry based learning outdoors, using senses to find comfort in new or familiar environments. Tea blending, traditional soap making, outdoor skills building.

Three months of growth on these little willows! I haven't watered once, thank you to the rains of HG..

Planted 40 willow cuttings of 10 varieties. Great root rate, almost all are growing leaves! I'll leave these to grow for one year then come back to harvest them. You can leave them longer and let them thicken, but that would be for BIG baskets or furniture!

Spacing depends on the variety, and how thick I want the willow to grow, roughly one long stride between plantings.

Put down my basket while collecting rocks, and saw this seaweed perfectly dancing alongside. What a pretty world of natural colours n shapes!

I ended up not collecting much in the basket, so maybe I just took her out for a walk to see the sites?

Post brain injury, I am learning to drive and socialize again ❤️

Feeling very excited to have spent some time with Joan Carrigan and Glen Kraushar and am so inspired! Both are weaving full-time and creating wildly different vessels and creations from the same plant: willow.

I will share more in the weeks to come ✨

To those folks who I've never met, but are following this account, hello ✨🌺

My fingers itch to weave, always, and I'm entering a decade where I hope to bring more of my love of bending and twisting sticks to many others.

I learned a German/ Welsh style of weaving from my dad at a young age, which I still practice today. I've also been influenced by other styles of weaving, weavers which have shaped the baskets or structures I make today.

I've lived in Haida Gwaii for about six years, and grow a number of varieties of weaving friendly willows, as well as using the native species of willow and dogwood for creations. I feel very grateful to weave, play and live here. Wherever I go, I am always bending branches as weaving patterns have no bounds.

Follow along for hopefully some upcoming summer and fall workshops located on the West Coast of BC.
