This is very cool. And look at how many years ago the pianoforte was created, giving piano music a new voice!
Before Bartolomeo Cristofori, music couldn't whisper and then roar from the same keyboard. His groundbreaking invention around 1700 introduced hammers that struck strings, allowing for a dynamic range of 'soft and loud' that forever changed musical expression.

My leg was shaking and I forgot the ending... 🎹💨
People often ask me if I still get nervous after years at the keys. The answer is yes and no! I’ve played for crowds of over 2,000 and for intimate small groups. Over the years, I’ve learned that performing isn’t about being perfect—it’s about having the confidence to "keep the music going," even when things go sideways.
I’ll never forget performing Sinding's "Rustle of Spring." It was a number of pages of intense memorization. I was so nervous that my right leg—my pedal foot!—started shaking uncontrollably.
Then, the unthinkable happened: I reached the final section and completely blanked. Because of my years playing for church and worship, I knew how to improvise. I didn't stop. I leaned into those skills, improvised a transition, and brought the piece to a solid close on the tonic.
Afterward, my teacher came up with her signature sweet smile and said, "That was a very interesting rendition, Cheryl!" The lesson for my students? Don't fret about mistakes. In my studio, I teach you how to "keep the music going." We don't just learn notes; we learn the confidence to incorporate a mistake as if it were written that way all along.
Music is a journey, not a test. Let’s find your confidence together.

After 30 years of performing, leading, and living through music, I’ve realized the greatest joy isn't just playing—it's passing the torch. 🎹✨
I am so thrilled to announce that my new website, cherylspianostudio.com, is officially live.
For me, this studio is a way to give back to our Whitby community. I’ve spent three plus decades at the keys, and now I want to share that legacy with the next generation of musicians (and the 'young at heart' adults who have always wanted to play!).
Whether you are looking for a mentor for your child or a creative escape for yourself, I invite you to see what we’re building here in Whitby.

PART 4: Why Musicians Rock at Math (Even if they don't know it!)
Music is pure mathematics disguised as art! Every time you count a rhythm, understand a time signature, or recognize a chord progression, you are engaging the analytical centers of your brain.
How Piano Helps with Logic:
🎼Fractions & Ratios: Quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes teach fractions and ratios in a tangible, auditory way.
🎹Pattern Recognition: Identifying scales, chord inversions, and harmonic sequences sharpens the brain's ability to see and predict complex patterns in all areas of life (science, coding, engineering).
This skill is perfect for children and helps adults keep their minds sharp! See the full-brain impact coming up next in Part 5: Time to Start! 👧👨🦳

PART 3: Learning Piano is Like Learning a Second Language!
When you read sheet music, you’re not just seeing dots; you’re decoding a complex language of symbols, pitch, and rhythm—all while simultaneously translating it into physical movement.
This process directly benefits the parts of the brain responsible for reading and language:
🎶 Boosted Memory: Piano practice is intensive training for working memory (remembering what's next while playing what’s now). And this is especially great for us 'mature' students who are seeking ways to keep up with our littles!
🎶 Stronger Reading Skills: The process of decoding symbols (notes) and associating them with meaning strengthens neural pathways used for verbal language comprehension.

PART 2: Why Piano Players Think Faster (It’s All About Coordination!) 🎹
Have you ever noticed how pianists seem to have incredible dexterity and focus?
That’s thanks to the Corpus Callosum—the superhighway connecting the two halves of your brain! 🎶
Playing piano demands bimanual coordination: your left hand and right hand must do completely different things at the same time.
🤚🖐️
The Result? Studies show musicians develop a thicker, faster corpus callosum.
This means better communication between the logical (left) and creative (right) sides, leading to:
✅Faster Problem Solving
✅Improved Fine Motor Skills
✅Better Multitasking

The Full-Brain Workout
🤯 PART 1: Forget Sudoku—The Piano is the ULTIMATE Brain Workout!
Did you know playing the piano is the only activity that engages nearly every major area of your brain simultaneously?
At Cheryl Devenney's Piano Studio, we don't just teach notes; we train minds!
Here’s the secret: When you play, your brain is doing high-speed cognitive work:
Left Hand: Reading rhythm & patterns (Logic/Math).
Right Hand: Controlling melody & expression (Creativity).
Eyes/Ears: Monitoring sound and reading ahead (Processing speed).
Ready to give your brain a power-up? Stay tuned tomorrow for Part 2: The Coordination Secret!
