Grade 5 and 6 students from Mr. Bennett’s class started off their day building their word power through morphology! Today, we dove into the Latin root "rupt," which means to break, burst, or shatter.

Today, we explored words like:
Erupt: To break or burst out (like a volcano or laughter!)
Interrupt: To break in between a conversation or activity
Disrupt: To break apart the normal flow of something
Bankrupt: When someone's finances are completely broken

How to Support This Learning at Home
Here are a few quick ways you can practice at home this week:
Play "Spot the Root": Challenge your child to listen or look for "rupt" words while watching TV, reading together, or driving around town.
Break Down the Meaning: When you encounter a word like abrupt or corrupt, ask your child: "Since you know 'rupt' means break, what do you think this word means?"
Word Hunt Challenge: Ask them to share their favorite "rupt" word over dinner and explain how the idea of "breaking" fits into its definition.
Building a strong vocabulary is a team effort, and we love seeing our students apply these word strategies inside and outside the classroom.

Our students showed so much determination and heart running on Friday in honour of Terry Fox and raising funds for cancer research.
A huge thank you to all the parents, guardians, and family members who came out to cheer everyone on and support our school! Having our community together on the sidelines made the day extra special for the kids.

🧠 Big Words, Big Connections in Mr. Paquin’s Class! 🔬

This week, our Grade 7 and 8 students kicked off a new morphology study—the study of word parts and meanings—focusing on the prefix "under-" (meaning below, less than, or insufficient).

To make the learning stick, students are connecting word structure directly to their current Science unit, analyzing how understanding prefix roots helps unlock complex scientific concepts and technical vocabulary.

💡 How you can help at home:
Spot the Prefix: Challenge your middle schooler to find 3 words using the prefix "under-" in a book, news article, or during daily conversation.

Break It Down: Ask them to separate the word into its prefix and base word (e.g., under + current) and explain how "under-" changes the word's total meaning.

This week, grade 7 and 8 students in Mr.Paquin’s class are expanding their vocabulary and reading comprehension through morphology—the study of word parts and how they fit together.

Our focus this week is the prefix under-.
What Does "Under-" Mean?

While we often think of under- as a physical position (like underground), it frequently carries other meanings:
Insufficient or not enough: underestimate, underpaid, understaffed
Below or beneath in rank/status: understudy, subordinate
Hidden or fundamental: underlying, undermine

By analyzing how word roots and prefixes interact, students learn to unlock the meaning of more complex terms.

🏠 How You Can Support the Learning at Home:

Here are 3 quick ways to practice together:
🗣️ The "Shift the Meaning" Challenge: Pick a base word (like value, rate, or state) and add the prefix under-. Ask your student: "How does adding 'under-' change the meaning of the word?"

📰 Spot It in the Wild: Encourage your child to scan news headlines, sports articles, or non-fiction texts for under- words. Ask them to explain whether it means "beneath," "not enough," or something else in context.

Here are a few examples your child will be practicing this week:F: fluff, cliff, puff L: hill, bell, smell S: grass,miss, toss Z:buzz, fizz, jazz

🏠 How You Can Extend the Learning at Home:Want to help your child master the FLSZ rule? Here are 3 quick, fun ways to practice together:
🔍 Word Detective: While reading bedtime stories, ask your child to spot words that end with double letters like -ff, -ll, -ss, or -zz.
✍️ Whiteboard Spelling: Give your child 3–4 words to spell (e.g., mess, stiff, chill, buzz). Remind them: "Short vowel sound before /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/? Double it!"
👏 Sound & Tap: Say a word like fizz. Have your child tap out the sounds (f - i - zz) and ask, "Is 'i' a short vowel? Does it end in 'z'? How do we spell that ending?"
