New Release – The Girl Who Read to Alligators by Alice Hammel
What happens when a child struggles to connect with peers or finds conversation overwhelming?
In The Girl Who Read to Alligators, a quiet, introspective girl discovers confidence not through people—but through reading aloud to the alligators in a nearby swamp. 🐊💬
As she builds a relationship with the natural world, she also begins to find her voice—and, in time, the courage to connect beyond it.
This beautifully illustrated story gently explores themes of:
Social anxiety & self-expression
Neurodiversity and alternate forms of connection
The transformative power of reading
A must-read for educators, librarians, parents, and anyone who believes in the quiet strength of every child.

What a wonderful week so far here at the Midwestern State University Kodály Institute! It’s such a gift to be surrounded by fellow educators who care deeply about teaching music in meaningful and thoughtful ways. These conversations and moments of learning are reminding me why this work matters so much. Thank you so much for letting me teach!
