Sifu Richard has grown up with WKFA, beginning his training in 2011 at just five years old, training alongside three of his siblings. His martial arts journey eventually took him through his Black Sash grading in 2025 - an accomplishment he jokingly describes as being proud to have made it through “in one piece.”

Sifu Richard assists with Saturday morning Youth and Junior classes. He describes his teaching style as “pushing limits and theory-driven,” reflecting his interest not only in performing techniques, but understanding the principles behind them.

Outside WKFA, Richard is pursuing his Mechatronics Engineering degree at the University of Waterloo. His interests include piano, reading, woodworking and robotics. He also loves to bake - and readily admits to having a terrible sweet tooth.

Sifu Jackson has been part of WKFA for most of his life, beginning his training in 2010 at just four years old. Since then, he has grown from a young student into an Instructor, earning his Black Sash in 2025.

Sifu Jackson currently teaches Junior Novice II and describes his teaching style as flexible and detail-oriented.

Beyond regular classes, he has spent many years with the Lion dance, Performance and Demonstration teams in addition to helping with our summer camps.

Kung-fu has also become a family activity for the De Vitos where two of his three siblings currently train alongside him at the Academy.

Outside WKFA, Sifu Jackson is an Earth Sciences student at the University of Waterloo. He enjoys rock climbing, working out and travelling. Fun fact - his favourite animal is the pangolin.

Sifu Maia started at WKFA’s Little Ninjas program at just three years old in 2006. After 13 years away from kung fu, studying dance, she returned to WKFA’s Adult Program in 2018 at age 15. 7 years later, she earned her 1st degree Black Sash in 2025.

Her connection to the Academy extends through her family as well. Sifu Maia’s mother trained at WKFA alongside Sifu Syd while her younger sister also trained as a Little Ninja.

Sifu Maia began assisting with Junior Novice II in 2020 and later became an active instructor for the class. She describes her teaching style as knowledgeable, engaging and thorough. She has participated in WKFA’s Demonstration, Lion Dance and Performance teams, as well as summer camps for many years.

One of Sifu Maia’s most memorable achievements came while grading from Green to Blue Sash, when she created and performed her own fan form.

Outside the Academy, she enjoys animals, art, music, dance, nature, baking and is currently studying acupuncture at Humber Polytechnic.

Sifu Jordan began training at WKFA in 2011 at the age of five. Over more than a decade at the Academy, he progressed from a young student to instructor and earned his Black Sash in 2025 - an achievement he considers one of the proudest moments of his martial arts journey.

Sifu Jordan currently teaches Friday’s Youth Yellow and Orange Sash students. He describes his approach to teaching as energetic and enthusiastic, qualities that also carry into his extensive involvement beyond regular classes.

Sifu Jordan has spent many years on the Demonstration, Competition, Performance, and Lion Dance teams and has also been involved with WKFA’s summer camps. Kung-fu also runs in his family, with his older brother training as well.

Outside of Kung-Fu, Sifu Jordan is studying Sustainability and Financial Management and pursuing his Chartered Professional Accountant designation at the University of Waterloo. He also enjoys collecting and playing trading card games, a hobby he has had since a child.

Sifu Karthik began training at WKFA in 2014 at age 43. 11 years later, he earned his 1st degree Black Sash in 2025.

While earning his Black Sash is a major milestone, Sifu Karthik also remembers receiving his very first Red Sash as one of the most meaningful moments of his training. Together, those achievements bookend the progression from taking his first steps in kung-fu to becoming an Instructor.

Sifu Karthik currently assists with Wednesday’s Youth Advanced class and regularly steps in to teach other classes. His approach to teaching emphasizes strong fundamentals while drawing on ideas from other disciplines - particularly incorporating aspects of yoga related to stretching and mobility into kung-fu training.

Outside the kwoon, Sifu Karthik works as a software engineer. He also enjoys cooking, movies, reading and watching sports.

Sifu Veronica began training at WKFA in 2016, bringing with her previous martial arts experience of 10 years studying karate. She earned her 1st degree Black Sash in 2025.

One of her earliest memorable experiences at WKFA was watching an advanced grading and realizing just how demanding the path to the next sash could be. Years later, earning her own Black Sash became one of the accomplishments she is most proud of.

Sifu Veronica teaches Thursday’s Junior Novice class. She describes her teaching style as patient and encouraging, with Sifus Mark, Sarah and Anne among the instructors who have most influenced her own training.

She has been a member of WKFA’s Lion Dance Team for five years and has contributed to the Academy newsletter since 2023.

Outside kung-fu, she enjoys video games, as well as reading fantasy novels and spending time with family. During the day, she supervises elementary-school children over lunch and handles bookkeeping for her husband’s company.

Sifu Bala began training at WKFA in 2011 at the age of 48. His journey from beginner to Sifu has been shaped as much by setbacks as by successes. He became the oldest Sifu to earn a black sash when he did so in 2024.

While successfully completing his Black Sash grading is one of his proudest accomplishments, he identifies an unsuccessful Green-to-Blue Sash grading as one of his most memorable. That experience helped shape the philosophy he now brings to teaching: failure can be an important part of improvement.

Sifu Bala describes his teaching style as leading by example. Rather than teaching only from success, he draws on techniques and challenges he has struggled with himself - showing students how mistakes can be identified, corrected and ultimately overcome.

He has spent eight years with the Competition team and trains at WKFA alongside his daughter.

Outside the Academy, Sifu Bala is an electrical engineer who has spent more than 20 years with BlackBerry. As he puts it - debugging code by day and debugging his jump-turn-side kick by night!
