The goal of the Waswanipi Wapistan Project is to combine scientific and traditional knowledge with an educational program for youth to monitor a key species, the American marten on the territory of Waswanipi.

Why did we choose to study the American marten?

The marten is considered an “umbrella species”, which means its changes in population often match with other species in their environment, such as bears, fishers, lynx, among many. This also means that they can serve as a useful indicator of ecosystem health. If the population of marten in Eeyou Istchee goes down, it can indicate that the forest is not healthy.

Here is part 2 of the wapistan project footage gathered in 2025-2026!

Captions are available all pictures, as some of the animals can be difficult to spot! The main focus of our project is the wapistan, also known as the american marten, but we enjoy seeing other animals on our cameras. As always, please ask in the comments if you have any questions, thank you!

As promised, here is part 1 of the best pictures from our 2025-2026 season!

A bit of context on our goals this year;
2 cameras were installed per site, one facing north and the other facing south, with a beaver bait installed in front of it to hopefully capture footage of marten. Beaver bait was recommended by our tallymen, and its strong smell has been successful in attracting many animals.

The wapistan project is back!

We have completed our retrieval of the cameras installed in 2025, and looked at all the pictures (over 300 thousand!!). We will be making another post later today with a compilation of the best selected pictures from the 40 cameras we installed last year.

We would also like to announce that weekly posts will be done until the end of August with more footage that we would like to share. Please let us know if you have any questions in the comments or by contacting our email. Thank you!

Our project goes far beyond the territory of Eeyou Istchee! 🌎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The Waswanipi Wapistan Project was presented today at the 8th International Martes Symposium in Aviemore, Scotland, by our collaborator at Laval University, Pauline Suffice. It’s an honor to be represented at this international event. This will open up the possibility of recognition and collaboration with future collaborators.

Wapistan project winter installation 2023, it’s a wrap! 😁

We installed 51 cameras on over 7 Waswanipi traplines throughout the winter. Our best year so far!

The wildlife biologist, Eliane Grant, and the land keeper, Ian Saganash, presented the Waswanipi Wapistan Project at 2022 symposium “New Socio-Economic Develipment Strategies for, by and with First Nations” in Quebec city. This event was organized by Chaire de leadership en enseignement en foresterie autochtone. The symposium was an opportunity to reflect on sustainable forestry development for, by and with Indigenous peoples in Canada.
