Our project goes far beyond the territory of Eeyou Istchee! 🌎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The Waswanipi Wapistan Project was presented today at the 8th International Martes Symposium in Aviemore, Scotland, by our collaborator at Laval University, Pauline Suffice. It’s an honor to be represented at this international event. This will open up the possibility of recognition and collaboration with future collaborators.

Wapistan project winter installation 2023, it’s a wrap! 😁

We installed 51 cameras on over 7 Waswanipi traplines throughout the winter. Our best year so far!

The wildlife biologist, Eliane Grant, and the land keeper, Ian Saganash, presented the Waswanipi Wapistan Project at 2022 symposium “New Socio-Economic Develipment Strategies for, by and with First Nations” in Quebec city. This event was organized by Chaire de leadership en enseignement en foresterie autochtone. The symposium was an opportunity to reflect on sustainable forestry development for, by and with Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Pine martens with anomalous coloration have been observed for the first time!

Emiliano Manzo et al. captured two videos of pine martens with hypopigmentation, in a camera trapping study on Elba Island, Central Italy.

Both pine martens had a lack of pigmentation throughout the whole body, including the nose, and had a pale yellow appearance with an even lighter throat patch.

Whilst anomalous colouration has been reported in other Martes species, including yellow-throated marten and stone marten, it has never been documented in European pine martens in the scientific literature!
