Pelican Mountain students and staff went on a field trip last week to Edmonton. They went to Jurassic Forest, the Zoo and Fort Edmonton Park. They all had a fun time; memories were made.

We celebrated the year end with Awards for the students, a wonderful lunch and games. We started off with an inflatable race. We also did nail pounding, log sawing, sack races, three-legged race and spoon race. There was also a bike decorating contest. This was the last Year end Picnic for Pelican Mountain School. Everyone had a great time and many memories were made.

We had our last monthly Elder’s luncheon in May.

We will be doing Kindergarten Orientation on Monday, June 17th at St. Theresa School for any children who will be 5 by December 31st, 2024. Your child can ride the bus to and from school. They will be at school all day from 8:30-3:30. Please call the school for any further information. We will be calling parents to let them know about Orientation.

Good morning. If there are any more 4 year olds out there that are pre-registering for St. Theresa School in the fall, we have a few appointment slots open this afternoon for Speech and Language screening and Occupational Therapy screening (fine motor skills). Please drop off you application at St. Theresa School. Thank you. Students must be screened to see if they qualify for early entry into school.

📢 Board Approves Closure of Pelican Mountain School

The Board of Trustees approved the closure of the Kindergarten to Grade 3 instructional program at Pelican Mountain School. This decision was made as per Section 62 of the Education Act.

On January 27, 2024, the Board approved a Notice of Motion regarding the possible closing of Pelican Mountain School in Sandy Lake. Northland School Division’s Policy 15 outlines a process for school closures. This included hosting a public meeting, which occurred on March 11, 2024. At the public meeting, the Board presented the Pelican Mountain School Viability Study. The study outlined a rationale for a possible closure, student enrollment, financial analysis, education results and impact of keeping the school open.

In addition to the report, families and staff were given the opportunity to help Northland understand the reasons why parents/guardians are sending their children to other schools and give parents and community members the opportunity to discuss alternative programs and the preferred future for Pelican Mountain School. While the instructional program closure is confirmed, the future of the Pelican Mountain School facility remains under consideration. The administration will conduct a feasibility study to explore transforming the Pelican Mountain School facility into a Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Learning, a central office, or other potential uses.
