UVic alumni are invited to give back to the community by participating in a beach clean-up in partnership with Surfrider Foundation.

Surfrider Foundation is committed to fostering a just, equitable, diverse and inclusive organization for all people who depend on, protect and enjoy the world’s ocean, waves and beaches.

UVic alumni, friends and family roared up a storm Friday night to watch the BC Lions take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Place as part of the team’s Orange Shirt Day Game to honour and respect Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Leos won 31-24.

This was the first time UVic Alumni has organized an alumni event at a BC Lions game, but judging by the turnout, it won’t be the last.

Tomorrow, UVic is recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

This year our gathering takes place in UVic’s Centennial Stadium. Students, faculty staff, alumni and community are invited to join us Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. at the stadium to gather, listen, learn and reflect on the truths of residential schools.

UVic Theatre grad Medina Hahn, BFA ’97, garnered much acclaim for her interactive reconciliation-based theatre production Inheritance: a pick-the-path experience, which she co-wrote and starred in.

Inheritance has since been turned into a movie and is currently making the film festival circuit, with its US debut in November at the Red Nation International Film Festival in Los Angeles.

Co-starring Hahn and directed by Camille Beaudoin, Inheritance explores what happens when the colonial rights to a vast plot of land come up for grabs, and three people—Indigenous, immigrant and settler—battle over its stewardship.
