*The Birds and the Bees: True Story*

My mother entered my bedroom. She sat at the edge of my bed and announced, “I would like to talk to you about . . . boys and girls, men and women . . . the birds and the bees, so to speak.”

“Why the birds and the bees?” I asked. I’d heard this term before, but it had no associated meaning for me.

“That’s what they call it.”
Curiously, I asked her to continue.

“I’ll start with the body parts of men and women,” she said. “I have a little book for you that you can look at on your own after.”

“A p***s,” she explained, “looks like a turkey’s head upside down, with those darker flappy parts.” At this, she cracked up and laughed so hard she doubled over. The image in my head looked pretty gross, with a long hairy thing and droopy flappy skin, but she was laughing so much that I started to laugh too.
“Now, a woman on the other hand, is like a beehive without the bees. It is enclosed but if you go through the entrance, it is warm, sticky and sweet. Farther up there is the Queen’s chamber, where all of life is created.”

I liked this story much better, although I doubted that I had one of those bee combs between my legs. There was, however, sometimes a buzzing, a zinging feeling, and a lot of energy moving around, even enough to be a distraction at times.

“Now,” she continues, “For how babies are made. The man puts his p***s “(turkey neck, the bird part) “into her vagina” (empty bees hive? Honeycomb?) “--- “

She didn’t get any further.
It dawned on me.
“You LET Daddy do that to you??? That’s terrible! That’s so gross!”
“Oh Sophia, “she said. “It feels good when you love each other.”

In the book, she gave me, I found an illustration of a v***a. It looked like a bee! It had an oval shape with a bees head at the top and wings around the sides. It even had stripes across the body and I tried to decide if these were lines for shading or actual patterning. I put a small mirror under me to see what was there, and I decided that I was not normal. Mine was pretty and looked nothing like a receptacle for pollination, or a pollenating insect. It was soft and pink, like the bud of a rose.
