The Heart of the City Piano Program is a non-profit organization that provides piano lessons for inner-city children.
Originating in Saskatoon, the program now extends to numerous cities across Canada. As the Program expands to Vancouver, we hope to provide a chance for members of the community to share their love of music with children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to learn how to play the piano. Our volunteers provide one-on-one piano lessons to students at inner-city schools at no charge. In add
ition to providing weekly piano lessons, our volunteers will also teach rudimentary music theory to the children. Throughout the year, we will organize opportunities to attend live music performances and to participate in a Year-End Recital/Celebration of Achievement. For the children, the Heart of the City Piano Program is a chance for them to learn and create music. When children realize their capabilities in creating music, the whole world opens up to them. They become a part of the beauty around them and realize that they are more than capable of accomplishing whatever they set their minds to. Therefore, our program seeks children that would benefit most from piano lessons. For our volunteers, the Program provides an excellent teaching opportunity and a chance to be the change in a child’s life. Our dedicated volunteers serve as positive role models to the children, ambassadors to the inner-city community, and representatives of the University of British Columbia.
