We broke the rules and it changed everything.

Would you involve your clients in creative thinking, or keep them at a distance?

Most marketing advice online is completely disconnected from how iconic brands were actually built.

Because real branding is messy.

It’s politics.
Client fights.
Gut instinct.
Risk.
Ideas nobody believed in at first.

Before brands become “iconic,” there’s usually a room full of people convinced the idea won’t work.

That’s the part I’ll be talking about at Vancouver Marketing Hub.

Not recycled LinkedIn advice.
Not “10 hacks to go viral.”

Real stories from inside the advertising industry from someone who’s actually spent decades in the room building brands.

If you work in marketing, branding, business, or creative strategy, I think this conversation will change the way you see brand-building.

Fenty didn’t just launch a beauty brand. It changed expectations.

When Fenty Beauty introduced 40 foundation shades at launch, it immediately highlighted a gap that many beauty brands had ignored for years.

Customers responded quickly, and soon the entire industry began expanding shade ranges and embracing more inclusive campaigns.

The difference is that Fenty built its brand on inclusion from the start, while others had to adapt later.

Sometimes the brands that win are the ones willing to challenge the assumptions of an entire category.

If your brand stands for nothing, the market will decide what it is for you.

Brands without clear meaning are often treated the same as everything else. Customers choose based on price or convenience because there is nothing else to hold onto.

When a brand has meaning, it creates a reason for people to choose it. And that is what sets it apart in a crowded market.

The best leadership lesson I had this week came from a pod of dolphins.

I stepped away from my desk and walked along the seawall in West Vancouver.

Out on the water, a small pod of dolphins moved together with quiet coordination and trust.

It reminded me how often we try to solve complex business challenges alone.

Dolphins thrive in pods. They rely on leadership, awareness, and mutual support.

Better decisions often come when we create space to think and reconnect with others.

If you can, step outside this weekend. A clear head and shared insight will take you further than isolation ever will.

You don’t own your brand. Your customers do.

A lot of businesses think they can "advertise" their way into a great reputation. But people don’t define your brand by your ads; they define it by how you make them feel.

Perception becomes reality over time. If your customers' honest description of you doesn't match your mission statement, you have a major strategy problem.

How would you describe your brand in 3 words? Tell me below! 👇

Most brands are addicted to reinvention.

Campbell Soup Company became iconic by being predictable instead.

Same product.
Same familiar experience.
Generation after generation.

Sometimes consistency builds stronger brands than constant change.

You are marketing a promise that your experience is breaking.

It’s easy to talk a big game in an ad, but it’s much harder to actually deliver on it every single day. We have all bought from a company that promised the world and delivered a headache. That is exactly how you lose a customer forever. Your brand isn't what you tell people it is—it's how they feel after they’ve spent their hard-earned money with you.

Real reputation is built when you show up and do what you said you’d do, time and time again. Consistency is the only thing that actually builds trust.

Your brand is one lie away from total irrelevance.

Trust is built in promises kept, but it disappears the second you fail to deliver. Commandment 9 reminds us that a brand is only as strong as its consistency. If you promise a specific experience and don't provide it, your customers will see through the noise immediately.

A brand promise only matters if you keep it. Every time. Everywhere. No exceptions.

Have you ever stopped using a brand because they broke a promise to you? Tell me your story.
