我有許多讀者今晚的心情都相當沉重，因為他們親愛的老師，鋼琴家史蘭倩絲卡，在今天回到天堂的懷抱。BBC四個小時前發出的訃聞標頭是：「拉赫曼尼諾夫最後一位在世的學生露絲・史蘭倩絲卡去世，享年101歲。」

時間是1934年，史蘭倩絲卡突然接到一封緊急電報，原來拉赫曼尼諾夫的手肘受傷了，不能演出。主辦方希望史蘭倩絲卡能夠代替大師演出。她一口答應。

那一年，她才9歲。

這麼說你就知道了，論輩份之高，史蘭倩絲卡是當今樂壇大師的超級前輩。這幾年大師們相繼離開，波里尼還小她17歲；布蘭德爾也比她小六歲。她的老師是誰呢？拉赫曼尼諾夫、柯爾托、許納伯、霍夫曼、巴克豪斯，堪稱是武林絕學的最後傳人。

你或許不相信，縱使名滿天下，史蘭倩絲卡永遠以鋼琴為念想。對她來說，彈琴早已成為修練生活的一部分。四年前，她和DECCA簽下一紙合約，發行了一張等同於自傳的專輯《My Life in Music》。

而你知道嗎？當她97歲的高齡錄下這張絕無僅有的專輯時，感動了全世界。這時已經沒人在乎技巧這回事了。你當然聽得出技巧衰退了，手指也不如以往靈活了。但她演奏那些鍾愛的小曲子，一種老派的抒情敘事，飽含著難以言喻的靈光。在音樂之神的面前，全心全意地獻出她的所愛和所有。

最令人感動的，是偉大的史蘭倩絲卡和臺灣有深厚的淵源。丈夫過世時，她非常難過。這時，她的學生王潤婷告訴她，東吳大學要慶祝建校週年，因此邀請外國藝術家來臺擔任客座教授。

想了又想，這一輩子從來沒想過要來臺灣的史蘭倩絲卡，最後決定接受這場生命給的冒險，來到東吳成為客座教授。學生們都親暱地稱她奶奶，在她如沐春風的教學下，成長茁壯。

史蘭倩絲卡長年脖子都戴著一條項鍊，那是當年拉赫曼尼諾夫送她的信物。奶奶是這樣念舊的人，而你也常常會聽到她說起臺灣的好。前年5月20日，99歲的史奶奶特別發出賀電：「臺灣一直是在我的心中最近的地方，祝福臺灣有長久的幸福、繁榮與和平。」

啊，身處太平洋的另一端，卻仍心繫這片她始終無法忘情的寶島，如何不叫人感動呢？

《My Life in Music》第一首，是拉赫曼尼諾夫的作品《小雛菊》，在音樂裡描繪著花海裡的年輕女子。你或許可以說這是為了紀念恩師而彈，但套句她自己的話：「我幾乎一輩子都在彈這首歌曲，彈到中段一個降D大和弦時，彷彿爬到山頂上，俯瞰腳下一片花海。」

謝謝史奶奶。今夜伴著您的錄音入眠，我知道心中有一片花海，將始終盛開。

大提琴寶寶們，今天練琴了嗎？

話說，巴哈最著名的大提琴作品「無伴奏組曲 」在它被譜寫完之後並未受到重視。在乏人問津地沉寂數百年後，輾轉在西班牙巴塞隆納的一個二手書店裡意外的被一位13歲的大提琴學生發掘。他如獲珍寶的將它帶回家苦練了十多年才終於公開演出此組曲，隨後並錄製整個作品。
從此「巴哈無伴奏大提琴組曲」才廣為流傳進而成了大提琴學生的聖經寶典必學的曲目。

卡薩爾斯對《組曲》最大的貢獻是將它提升至經典作品的地位。自從卡薩爾斯開始在音樂會中公開演出《組曲》後，使世人深刻感受到這部作品的藝術價值。
在商業錄音技術日漸成熟的背景下，卡薩爾斯最終在1936-1939年間灌錄了第一套全本錄音，也因此奠定了《巴哈無伴奏組曲》在大提琴古典樂中的經典永恆的地位。

Dear Friends and Fellow Humans,

I turn 70 today. For 7 decades I’ve had the privilege of living out my childhood dream, which was simply to UNDERSTAND. After spending more than half a century meeting people from all over the world willing to tell me their stories, I have found meaning, purpose and hope through advocating for their voices with music. I am deeply grateful to them all.

But today, I am worried. In the year 2100, my youngest grandchild will be 76. She will be meeting a world I will not see. I wonder what the world will be like then? And what can we all do now to ensure that today’s children can live with hope, purpose and meaning?

I try to remember that WE ARE NATURE. Embedded within nature, and in us, are the seeds of incredible creativity and terrifying destructiveness. My deepest birthday wish is that all of us humans become constantly aware of these opposing forces within us, and that we actively choose to create rather than destroy. Only then can we be free to imagine, invent and construct a new way of living together. Only then can we live in equilibrium with one another and with our planet, include all the wisdom of the ages, allow awe and wonder to be a part of our lives, and most of all, treat every human being with dignity:
a PLANETARY HUMANISM.
