FGL11. Urban Design and Cities - Aug 1-12, 2016
Using Vancouver as an urban laboratory, learn the fundamentals of sustainable urban design, meet with working professionals, and apply what you learn to an existing neighbourhood through an integrated planning session (charrette). Urban design focuses on neighbourhoods, districts and entire cities, and unites all built environment professions, including urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, civil and municipal engineering.
This is an excellent course for students thinking about a future career in any of these professions, as well as land and real estate development or community and regional planning.
Instructor: Kari Dow (MLA, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, University of British Columbia) is an affiliate in the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. A planner and urban designer, Kari has worked in both the private and public sector and remains actively involved in academia where she teaches, researches and presents her work on sustainable city building. Kari specializes in complex, action-oriented projects that successfully integrate planning and design at the site, district and neighbourhood scale.

Meet the Dean of The University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Applied Science, Dr. Marc Parlange. "...he is indeed an extremely accomplished individual, but he’s also just a really nice guy!"
Continuing our series of getting familiar with the engineering community, let’s meet the Dean!
Dr. Marc Parlange here is our Dean in the Faculty of Applied Science and concurrently a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. He attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from Griffith University in Australia and earned both his Masters of Science in Agricultural Engineering and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University. Prior to assuming his position at UBC in 2013, Dr. Parlange served as Dean in the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland and held faculty appointments at UC Davis and Johns Hopkins University. His specializations lie in Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Hydrotechnical Engineering, where his research and contributions have led him to be a renowned name in his field. Don’t be intimidated by him though – he is indeed an extremely accomplished individual, but he’s also just a really nice guy! Give him a hello when you see him and introduce yourself. He’s chill.
To contact Dean Parlange, you can e-mail him at [email protected].
