✨ An Inspiring Conversation with a World-Class Pianist ✨

On May 23rd, around 20 students from World of Music and Arts and Mastery School of Music had the chance to sit down with Vincent Ong .ong_piano — 5th Prize Winner of the 19th International Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

Vincent opened the session by performing Schumann’s Arabesque, then answered questions from students on everything from practice routines, daily life as a professional musician, how he approaches difficult repertoire, and his favorite pieces of music. 🎵

A huge thank you to Vincent for his generosity and candour. Hearing first-hand about the discipline and dedication behind world-class musicianship is a perspective students need and rarely get on their personal journey. We look forward to bringing more moments like this to our students. ✨ 与世界级钢琴家的精彩交流 ✨

5月23日，约20位来自World of Music and Arts和 Mastery School of Music的学生参加了一场特别的分享会，与第19届华沙国际肖邦钢琴比赛第五名获得者 Vincent Ong（.ong_piano）面对面交流。

Recitals play an important role in student development, both musically and personally.

They encourage responsibility, resilience, and self-belief, while reminding students that progress matters more than perfection. It teaches students how to prepare, recover, and keep going, even when things aren’t perfect.

As we head into the holidays, we’re reminded how meaningful these moments truly are. Watching students step onto the stage and celebrate how far they’ve come is the greatest gift.

Every performance is proof of growth, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Recitals encourage young musicians to stretch beyond their comfort zones, connect with others, and gain confidence in who they are becoming. They also give students a well-deserved moment in the spotlight to share their growth.

Our talented guitar teacher, Tyler Belding, and his melodic vocalist wife, Sian Colman-Black Belding, brought much joy to UBC’s local retirement home with a beautiful Sunday musical performance.

What it means to us: Tyler and Sian embody our school’s deeply rooted belief that music can make a real difference to everyone’s lives and strengthen intergenerational community connections.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the flute?

Elegant, expressive, and full of life — the flute captures emotion like no other instrument. And who better to learn from than Ms. Mikyla Jensen?

Assistant Director of Mastery School of Music
She began piano lessons at just 3 years old and earned her ARCT in Piano Performance by 17. She also discovered her love for the flute and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Flute Performance with great distinction.

Mikyla continued her studies with a Master’s in Flute Performance at the University of Manitoba and an MA in Music Theory at UBC, where her research on tempo and performance was published in the UBC journal.
Now, she brings her passion, expertise, and stage experience to inspire students of all ages! 🎵
