Remediation by retention is not the answer! Even great schools using SOR principals need to be reminded of this! When we see immature behavior or lack of attentiveness (behavior that often accompanies dyslexia) in a struggling kinder or 1st grade student it is easy to jump to the conclusion,"He/she just needs a little more time."
When a child exhibits characteristics of dyslexia "more of the same" does not speed progress nor increase the confidence needed for fluency.

So what do we do?? Implement the Davis Methods! Davis Methods increase confidence, decrease confusion and help individuals to learn from their strength!

Yes we are… we are far more than standardized tests would have us believe.

This was shared by author Alexandra Penfold on Twitter along with the following message...

“This weekend I sorted through some papers my mom saved from my childhood. The top one is my 4th grade self evaluation. The bottom, my 4th grade state test score. Random House published my 6th book last week. ”

I understand the purpose of state tests, but they should NEVER be used to predict or define a person's capabilities or how much they can achieve in life.

If my SAT scores reflected my capabilities, I wouldn't be where I am today. (I do NOT do well on multiple choice exams. And that is most certainly not a reflection of my capabilities. )

This image is such a powerful reminder that we are more than what others think of us... and we are far more than what standardized testing tells us we are capable of.

"Evidence Based" -- But does it work? 03/02/2023

This is a very helpful article that will answer the "But, will it work?" question. It is written by Abigail Marshall (author of When Your Child has Dyslexia).
Let me know if you have any other questions about helping your child with the learning challenges they experience.

"Evidence Based" -- But does it work? Parents seeking help for their dyslexic kids usually have one question uppermost in their minds: will it work?

ADHD struggles

Recently I was reading a study about how doctors make assessments about growth development disorders based on skeletal maturity vs chronological age (yes, this is how I spend my free time 🤪). In this study, the researchers mentioned that bone age is hard to use as an accurate method until the ages of 18-22, because ossification and elongation of the bones in the hands and wrists are not complete until then.

Have you ever looked at the x-ray of the hand of a toddler or young child? Most of their hand is cartilage until about the age of 13. The joints are not fully closed until age 20 on average. In fact, there aren’t even ANY bones in the wrist until about age 3. (Swipe to see X-ray image)

Think about the amount of change and growth taking place in just that one part of our child’s little body.

A 5-year old’s hand is little squishy blob, protecting it from constant falls and blows that they take as they learn to use their bodies in this world.

THIS is why I tell you that it is so important to pay attention to more than academic growth. If we only focused on school norms that our children should be writing by the age of 5, we would completely ignore what is actually going on in our child’s body.

Development is holistic - our child’s bodies, brains, emotions, and minds are changing more in their first 20 years of life than the rest of their life collectively. Yet that’s when we expect the most of them.

Lean into that natural development, not what an arbitrary timeline is telling you. Trust your child to know what they need when they need it. Honor their natural timeline.

Also, one last nerdy side note - that same study mentions the importance of looking at bone development vs chronological age because AGE IS NOT A CLEAR FACTOR OF DEVELOPMENT. Expecting children to have grown a certain way or do a certain thing based on their birthday isn’t realistic.

Throw those timelines away! 👏🏽

The beautiful math of coral 03/20/2022

Brilliant, on many different levels.

The beautiful math of coral Margaret Wertheim leads a project to re-create the creatures of the coral reefs using a crochet technique invented by a mathematician -- celebrating the amazements of the reef, and deep-diving into the hyperbolic geometry underlying coral creation.
