This year’s Building for Sustainability Symposium opens with the Mayors of Canmore and Banff and the Reeve of the MD of Bighorn, sharing progress, priorities, and lessons from their communities, guided by questions submitted directly by local industry and organizations.

Three municipalities. Three approaches. A shared set of challenges and opportunities for regional collaboration.

The Building for Sustainability Symposium returns to Canmore, November 25-27, 2026.

This year, we're doing things a little differently, and we heard you ⬇️

Building for sustainability comes with real obstacles: cost, supply chain, labour, materials, market pressures, and more. Our panels, speakers, and workshops will tackle these challenges head-on, covering the wins, the setbacks, and everything in between.

We're also expanding the conversation around resilience: wildfire, flood, hail, and extreme weather, and what that means for long-term durability. Because builders are being asked to prepare for risks that go well beyond the building code.

By combining innovation with practicality and two-way dialogue, you'll leave with solutions you can actually apply, and help advance the ones that work right here in the Bow Valley.

Sustainable building isn't a single objective.

Today's building professionals are balancing energy performance, carbon reduction, affordability, climate resilience, material availability, insurance pressures, workforce constraints, and client expectations, often all at the same time. At Building for Sustainability 2026, we're bringing together builders, developers, architects, engineers, planners, suppliers, municipal leaders, and sustainability professionals to explore practical pathways to better buildings.

This year's conversations will focus on:

• Climate resilience, including wildfire, flood, hail, extreme heat, and other emerging risks

Join us in Canmore from November 25–27 for three days of ideas, connections, and practical solutions for building more sustainable and resilient communities.

The Symposium brings together builders, developers, planners, architects, engineers, contractors, building science experts, realtors, financiers, insurers, sustainability professionals, industry leaders, and municipal and community leaders to learn from one another, share practical solutions, and build connections across sectors.

This year’s program will feature engaging workshops, keynote and plenary sessions, networking opportunities, shared meals, and field experiences showcasing sustainability in action.

What can food teach us about relationship, reciprocity, community, and care?

Join us for Food is Our Teacher, the first workshop in our 2026 Harnessing the Power of Food series, featuring Tracey Stevens (Îyârhe Nakoda).

Together, we'll enjoy a meal while also exploring stories, cultural knowledge, and practical skills centered around food, while reflecting on how food connects us across generations, cultures, and ways of knowing.
