The perfect display for the first weeks of school! This All About Me balloon poster is great for a family project or for completing at school. I had a few students share their posters each day, along with a small sharing item from home. It was a great way to get to know each other better. I used to be that teacher trying to think of words on the spot during phonemic awareness practice.

“Okay…give me another word that rhymes with…”

Meanwhile, I'm looking around the classroom trying to come up with one. 😂

Eventually I realized I couldn't continue doing that. I needed the words ready for me.

That's why I created and keep these Phonemic Awareness in 5 Minutes cards close by. I can grab one for a quick warm-up, use it with a small group, or pull it out when we suddenly have five extra minutes.

I made a free set of word lists for you to try with your students, with practice for skills including rhyming, syllables, blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation.

Picture this... It's the first day of school and you get a student you weren't expecting added to your list, and you don't have a name tag for them! True story! I obviously couldn't dash out to the teacher supply store so that student got a makeshift name tag for a few days.

I could have avoided this with digital name tags. I switched over when our local teacher store closed and kicked myself for not creating them sooner.

Don't get caught short! Print them whenever you need them.

I know morphology matters… but when am I supposed to teach it?

If your literacy block already feels full, morphology can easily feel like one more thing.

I think it helps to keep it simple:

teach one short explicit lesson
revisit the skill in quick review throughout the week
focus on meaning, not just identifying the ending

Students should be able to:

identify the base word
identify the ending
read the word
explain what the ending tells them

Teaching morphology in Grade 1 doesn't have to mean adding another complicated program to your literacy block.

My new Grade 1 Morphology Lessons give you a clear, manageable place to begin.

Students learn to:

• identify the base word
• add the endings -s, -es, -ed, and -ing
• read the completed word
• break it into meaningful parts
• explain what the ending tells them
