Here are the final two Special Session features!

12) (Un)healthy infrastructures: Embodiment, care and the complex politics of postcolonial health
- This session invites papers that rethink health infrastructures beyond clinics and hospitals to include fragile, informal, and embodied systems of care—such as mobility, housing, welfare, and “shadow care infrastructures”—that shape survival, repair, and abandonment. The organisers welcome theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions, particularly from postcolonial, feminist, and decolonial perspectives, that examine how these infrastructures are produced, maintained, and unevenly distributed across racialised, gendered, and classed lines.

13) Researching Distress: Geographical Engagements within - and beyond - Treatment Gaps
- This session invites papers that critically engage with Global Mental Health by questioning dominant, metrics-driven framings of distress and the politics of whose suffering becomes visible. The organisers welcome geographical, theoretical, and creative contributions that explore alternative epistemologies of care, foreground postcolonial and decolonial perspectives, and reimagine how distress, care, and repair are understood across places and scales.

Special Session Series

Discover three featured sessions in our special session lineup below.

9) Necropolitical geographies: spaces of abandonment and survival

– This session invites papers from the Global North and Global South that examine the spatial politics of life, death, and decision-making through necropolitical lenses. Contributions may be theoretical, empirical, or methodological, addressing abandonment, withdrawal of care, weaponized nature, and practices of survival, resistance, and ethical research

10) Uncovering Trace within Geographies of Health and Wellbeing

- This session explores “trace” as a conceptual and methodological lens in geographies of health and wellbeing, connecting relational theories, place-based inequalities, mobilities, and lifecourse perspectives. We invite qualitative and critical work that examines how traces are made, erased, or contested across places—balancing salutogenic and pathogenic processes and reflecting on the value of “trace” as a conceptual tool for addressing complex societal challenges.

11) By Youth, With Youth, or For Youth? Creative Participatory Methods in Health Geography

- This session invites submissions of papers documenting experiences of conducting research with youth and young adults using creative participatory methods. Deadline for submissions for this session: February 20th 2026.
