Age Well with Charlene Day

Age Well with Charlene Day I spent years learning how to support my health, strength, and energy as I aged. I discovered that growing older doesn’t have to mean slowing down.

Now, at 75, I’m still dancing, learning, and living fully. Discover what helped me age well.

When most people hear “immune system,” they usually think of one thing:
Fighting germs.

And while that is part of the story, your immune system is much more complex.

Your immune system is a network of cells, tissues, organs, and signaling molecules that work together every day.

It helps your body recognize changes, communicate information, and respond appropriately.

Think of it less like a simple shield…
and more like a highly coordinated team.

That’s one reason immune health is such an interesting area of science.

It’s not just about what happens when you feel sick.

It’s about understanding the incredible system that is working behind the scenes every day.

💬 Did you ever think about your immune system as a communication network?

VO2 max is a good reading for longevity

We've talked about what happens inside the cell.

Now let's zoom out. 🫁

Your cells also need oxygen to support aerobic energy production.

Getting that oxygen where it needs to go requires several systems to work together.

Your lungs bring oxygen into the body.
Your heart and blood vessels help transport it.
Your muscles extract and use oxygen during activity.

And this is where VO₂ max enters the conversation.

VO₂ max reflects the maximum rate at which your body can take in, transport, and use oxygen during intense exercise.

So while NAD+ and VO₂ max measure or describe very different things, they help us look at wellness from two fascinating perspectives:

🔬 What's happening at the cellular level
🫁 How effectively the whole body performs as a system

Healthy aging isn't about one number.

It's about understanding how all of these systems work together.

Your immune system isn't just one thing.

It’s made up of many different parts working together.

Some immune cells help identify potential challenges.
Some help communicate information.
Some help create responses based on what the body encounters.

Together, these different parts create a sophisticated defense network.

It’s similar to any great team:
Different roles.
Different responsibilities.
One shared purpose.

And just like any team, the environment matters.

Nutrition, sleep, movement, and recovery all contribute to creating the foundation your body needs to function well.

Every day, normal processes inside the body create something called oxidative stress.

This is a natural part of being alive.

The body has built-in systems to help manage this process, and antioxidants are one part of that conversation.

Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress.

This is one reason nutrition matters so much.

Foods rich in antioxidants—such as colorful fruits and vegetables—are part of creating a supportive environment for the body.

Vitamin C is one example of a nutrient that contributes to antioxidant protection and normal immune function.

Healthy nutrition isn't just about filling your plate.

It's about providing the body with the tools it uses every day

One of the most fascinating things about the immune system is that it can learn.

Your body has the ability to recognize certain things it has encountered before.

This is part of what scientists call immune memory.

It’s one example of how complex and adaptable the human body is.

Your immune system isn't simply reacting randomly.

It is constantly gathering information, communicating, and adjusting.

The more we understand about immune health, the more we realize that supporting our bodies is about supporting a highly intelligent system.

And like any system, it needs the right environment to function well.

A healthy immune system isn't built from one single habit.

It comes from the foundation we create every day.

Quality sleep.
Balanced nutrition.
Regular movement.
Hydration.
Stress management.

And making sure our bodies receive important nutrients.

Vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc are examples of nutrients that contribute to normal immune function.

The goal isn't perfection.
It’s consistency.

Because your immune system is working every day…
and the habits you repeat become part of the environment you create for your body.

💬 Which healthy habit has made the biggest difference in your life?

Most of us think about our immune system when something goes wrong.

Someone gets sick.
Cold and flu season arrives.
We start feeling run down.

But your immune system doesn't switch on only when you feel unwell.

It is a complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and signaling molecules that is continuously working to recognize what is happening in the body and coordinate an appropriate response.

That means immune health is not just about what you do when you feel sick.

It's also about the foundation you build when you feel perfectly fine.

Adequate nutrition.
Quality sleep.
Regular movement.
Hydration.
Stress management.

And getting the nutrients your body needs.

Vitamin C is one of those nutrients. It contributes to normal immune function and also acts as an antioxidant, helping protect cells from oxidative stress.

One interesting thing about vitamin C is that our bodies don't make it, and we don't have a large storage reserve of it.
So consistency matters.

Your immune system is working every day. Supporting it can be part of your everyday routine, too.

Vitamin C has become almost synonymous with immune health.

But its role in the body goes beyond immunity.

Vitamin C contributes to normal immune function, but it is also involved in collagen formation, antioxidant protection, iron absorption, and normal energy metabolism.

It's also a nutrient your body cannot manufacture on its own.

And unlike some nutrients, vitamin C isn't stored in large amounts for long-term use.

That's why getting vitamin C regularly through foods such as citrus fruits, berries, peppers, broccoli, and other fruits and vegetables is important.

Supplementation can be another way to help fill nutritional gaps when appropriate.

But the bigger lesson is this:
One nutrient can have multiple jobs.

And that's why nutrition is so much more interesting than simply asking, “What vitamin is good for immunity?”

Sometimes the better question is:
“What roles does this nutrient play throughout the body?”

September can be a strange month for wellness.

Summer routines are ending.
School is starting.
Work schedules pick up.
Activities return.

And suddenly the relaxed rhythm of summer disappears.

That's why this can be a good time to reset the basics.

Instead of trying to completely overhaul your family's health routine, look at the things that tend to disappear when life gets busy.

Are you getting enough sleep?
Are meals still providing a variety of nutrients?
Are you drinking enough water?
Are you making time for movement?
Are fruits and vegetables still showing up regularly?
Are you paying attention to nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc that contribute to normal immune function?

The goal isn't perfection.

It's creating a routine that can actually survive a busy September.

It's tempting to think of the immune system as its own separate department.

But the body doesn't work that way.

Immune function is connected to nutrition, metabolism, sleep, physical activity, stress, and countless other biological processes.

Even the nutrients we consume can have multiple roles.

Vitamin C, for example, contributes to normal immune function while also participating in antioxidant protection and collagen formation.

Vitamin D and zinc also contribute to normal immune function.
That doesn't mean taking more of one nutrient automatically equals better health.

It means nutrition is part of a much larger system.

And that is an important distinction.

Healthy living isn't usually about finding one magic nutrient.
It's about creating a supportive environment for the many systems that keep us functioning every day.
