Today, we pause to remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, honour survivors and their families and communities, and reflect on the lasting impacts of this history.

As an osteopathic education community, we also recognize that learning about history is connected to how we understand health, care, and our relationships with the people and communities we serve.

Truth and reconciliation are not limited to one day. We encourage our students, faculty, staff, and community to continue listening, learning, and reflecting on Indigenous experiences of health and healthcare, and on how our own education and practice can be approached with greater awareness, respect, and humility.

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 ❤️ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲

Today is World Heart Day, a good reminder to pay attention to one of the body’s most important organs, and to think about heart health from more than one perspective.

An osteopathic approach looks beyond an individual structure and considers how different parts of the body relate to one another. For osteopathic manual practitioners, this means developing a detailed understanding of anatomy, physiology, movement, relationships between structures, and the clinical context in which a person presents.

That broader way of thinking is also reflected in how we teach at Sutherland-Chan School of Osteopathy.

Our Year 4 curriculum includes dedicated visceral and organ-focused courses, including Heart Assessment and Treatment, alongside courses focusing on systems such as the kidneys, bladder, lungs and pleura, and other areas of the body.

These courses give students the opportunity to explore the anatomy and clinical relationships of specific organs while continuing to develop their hands-on skills and clinical thinking.

On World Heart Day, let’s keep learning, keep moving, and keep the beat.

🤝 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗖𝗦𝗢 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀

Our Year 4 Kidney course was more than just a learning experience between an instructor and a class. Like our other courses, it showed how learning and support can happen at multiple levels.

While our lead instructor and teaching assistant guided the Year 4 students, two Year 5 students were also auditing the course, bringing their own experience into the classroom. At one point, one of them offered guidance to his Year 4 “therapist” while serving as a practice body.

It’s a small moment, but it reflects something we truly value at SCSO: students learning from teachers, from one another, and from the different stages of their osteopathic education journey.

For our Year 4 students, working alongside more experienced peers opens up another opportunity to gain practical insights and perspectives. For our Year 5 students, coming back to a course as auditors offers a chance to revisit concepts and techniques while helping guide the cohort behind them.

A sincere thank-you to our Year 5 auditing students for stepping up to help.

This kind of mutual support is what makes the Sutherland-Chan School of Osteopathy feel like more than just a collection of individual classes. It’s a community where different cohorts can learn and grow together.

𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟰 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 & 𝗚𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝟭!

Week 3 of our new program year brings us to the beginning of Year 4, and we’re so happy to welcome back the class who completed their third year with us last year!

They’re kicking off their fourth year with Kidney and Gynaecology 1, taught by Ms. Anie Lafrance, who brings more than 20 years of experience in osteopathic manual practice and education to the classroom.

This course is even more exciting with another experienced D.O.M.P., Mr. Brad Boake, joining us as a teaching assistant. With two experienced practitioners supporting the class, our students have an opportunity to learn from different perspectives while continuing to build their clinical knowledge and hands-on skills.

It’s a great start to another year for our hardworking (and always fun) Year 4 class! We can’t wait to see the further progress of their knowledge, clinical skills and confidence. 🙌

Did you know that September is Pain Awareness Month?

Roughly one in five ✋ Canadians live with chronic pain, which can stem from underlying health conditions or exist as a condition in and of itself.

Multidisciplinary pain services are considered to be the most effective approach to managing chronic pain, where osteopathy can play an important role in pain management, especially when combined with other approaches.

Osteopathy works with the whole person rather than only addressing symptoms. Chronic pain often presents with distressing impacts on mental and emotional health, affecting family, social and work relationships, in addition to the unpleasant physical sensations.

Research shows that hands-on osteopathic techniques can be highly effective for:
- Chronic low back pain
- Persistent neck and shoulder tension 💆‍♂️
- Pregnancy-related back pain 🤰

Pain is a unique experience and is different for everyone, and therefore requires a personalized approach to care.

By focusing on restoring natural movement, improving circulation, and treating you as a whole person, osteopathy helps you regain control of your body and your quality of life.
