Molecular science PhD candidate Jayde Casimir-Powell started her graduate career as the only Black student in her lab. Now, she’s helping ensure the next cohort will have a different experience.
In collaboration with postdoctoral researcher Dr. Patience Obi and professor Kafi Ealey, PhD, Jayde helped organize a launch event for the Black in STEM group at TMU, which included a screening of the film "Coded Bias" and a powerful panel discussion on equity in research. Supported by the Faculty of Science’s Dimensions Program, the Black Scholarship Institute, and the Faculty of Community Services at Toronto Metropolitan University, the event marks a major step forward in building a supportive network for Black students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty.
“It’s a heartwarming feeling to see that there are people like me. Now we can see each other, which is really amazing.” — Jayde Casimir-Powell
