Did you know 18.2 million Canadians rely on payroll delivered across 1.3 million businesses?
Payroll is more than paydays—it’s a critical function shaping organizational resilience and employee experience.
That’s why we’re pleased to share Beyond Paydays: The Evolution of Payroll in Canada, a new research report developed by the National Payroll Institute in collaboration with Deloitte.
This report offers a comprehensive look at the current state of payroll in Canada—highlighting key opportunities to enhance efficiency, strengthen resilience, and elevate the function’s strategic impact, while pointing to where the profession is headed.
Alongside the report, explore our interactive benchmarking dashboard to see how your payroll function compares to Canadian results and leading practices—by size, industry, geography, and more.
⏳ The benchmarking tool is publicly available until July 7, 2026—after that, it will be exclusive to members.

Today at our Annual General Meeting, we were thrilled to announce the appointment of our 2026-2027 Chair of the Board of Directors, Elvira Ciambella. The following is an exerpt from her touching remarks:
"Strong leadership is shaped by diversity of thought, expertise, and lived experience. But it also matters that women can look at the highest levels of this profession and see themselves there.
I have been fortunate to grow into a senior leadership role in my own career—and I have worked hard for every step of that journey. It has shown me what becomes possible when people are given the opportunity, the support, and the encouragement to lead.
That is why I am so encouraged by the new chapter the Institute is opening in leadership development for payroll professionals. In recent years, we have made significant investments in the competency framework and, most recently, in the all-new PLP program—making the path to leadership in payroll clearer, stronger, and more accessible than ever before.
We have all heard it before, but it is true: most of us probably did not dream of a career in payroll as children. And yet, here we are. Somewhere along the line we chose this profession, we committed to it, and we continue to invest in it.
So let me ask you today: what do you want to be when you grow up?
Because the truth is, none of us is done growing.
Who says that because we are no longer children, we have to stop dreaming, aspiring, or reaching for more?
A career in payroll can open doors. It can earn you a seat at the table. It can lead you into senior leadership—even the C-suite—if you are willing to keep learning, keep growing, and putting in the work."

Food insecurity is not just a social issue — it’s a workplace issue.
New research from the National Payroll Institute’s Cost of Hunger for Working Canadians Survey reveals that having a job is no longer enough to keep hunger at bay.
With 1 in 4 working Canadians experiencing food insecurity, the impacts are reaching far beyond the dinner table — affecting workers’ health, well-being and productivity across the country.
Employees with fluctuating income are most at risk, reinforcing the importance of predictable, accurate pay.
