I'm a gay uncle. I've heard this blended as 'guncle', too. Not so sure that sounds that great tbh. 😆
Gay Uncles Day, celebrated on the second Sunday in August, honors and uplifts gay relatives by celebrating their visibility, affirming their place in families, and countering the discrimination many have faced.

Have you read any from this 'Action on Issues' series from Pavillion?
So far, I'm enjoying these two.

In class, take any one of these Canada Post illustrations of events and get learners to describe what's happening and why. Then look through the actual context together.
Thanks to my IATEFL Memcom colleague, Rania Jabr, I've just learned of this three-month education festival online today. In August, they have talks/workshops like this that caught my eye:
🥰 Teaching With A Chronic Illness: Strength and Struggle
🥰 Against Vibe Accessibility: The harms of outsourcing accessibility to AI, Access Checkers, and Checklists
🥰 Enabling Accessible Blended Learning for Equity
🥰 Meaningful Conversations for Hope and Healing- Embracing 🥰 Vulnerability for Building Connection and Belonging
Lots of others, especially with regard to AI. There's a sliding scale ticket price depending on ability to pay, though nothing is free. Might be worth checking out.
It's that time again! Use the rest of summer to workshop that proposal!

Don't miss our next IATEFL Monthly Professional Development webinar this Saturday; 'Boosting Non-Native Students' Confidence in Pronunciation Through AI-Assisted Teaching', presented by Patricia Ibiapina.
This session explores how AI-assisted teaching can empower non-native students to improve their pronunciation, fostering both accuracy and confidence.
Participants will discover innovative strategies that integrate AI tools into language learning, offering personalized feedback and adaptive support tailored to individual needs. Rather than relying solely on traditional pronunciation drills, this session presents a fresh perspective by demonstrating how AI can create a low-anxiety learning environment, encourage self-correction, and expose learners to diverse accents.

It's a linguistic anniversary!
2026 marks the 36th anniversary of the coining of the term "Two Spirit" at the third Annual Intertribal Native American, First Nations, Gay and Le***an American Conference in Winnipeg on July 27, 1990.
The term Two Spirit is an English umbrella term used to reflect and restore Indigenous traditions that were forcefully suppressed by colonization, honouring the fluid and diverse nature of gender and attraction, and their connection to community and spirituality. It is used by some Indigenous People rather than, or in addition to, identifying as LGBTQI.

We have a responsibility to all our students, including our LGBTQ+ learners, to nurture their authentic feelings of belonging and support their abilities to express themselves as whom they are in another language.
The majority of teachers I talk to about inclusive practices in ELT don’t (yet) identify themselves within the LGBTQ+ community. Some obviously do--hi there ;)--but most are very interested in supporting. You’re allies and sometimes we just want a guide on being a good one because questions.
I've got some suggestions in this post 🏳️🌈 https://seburnt.substack.com/p/sharedpride-day-12-allyship
One of the references in this post is a book edited partly by Ethan Trinh, Ph.D., who is the main convo guest for episode 6!
