Congratulations to the two winners of St. Michael’s Hospital Department of Medical Imaging Physician Awards for the 25/26 year, Dr. Djeven Deva (left) and Dr. Vikram Prabhudesai (right)! Both physicians are first-time recipients of their respective awards.

Dr. Deva, MI Assistant Professor & Cardiothoracic Division Head, St. Michael's Hospital, received the Professor Ronald W. McCallum Award for Excellence in the Promotion of Quality, Innovation and Research in Medical Imaging. This is Dr. Deva's first time winning this award and, notably, he is only the second radiologists in the practice’s history to receive both awards.

Dr. Prabhudesai, MI Assistant Professor & VIR Division Head, St. Michael's Hospital, received the Professor William J. Weiser Award for Excellence in Teaching of Medical Imaging Residents and Fellows. This is Dr. Prabhudesai's first time winning this award.

Congratulations, Drs. Deva & Prabhudesai!

This year's AI in MI Networking Night, which took place on May 28 at the Atrium at Ricarda's, featured a much-anticipated speech from our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Birgit Ertl-Wagner, Radiologist-in-Chief, The Hospital for Sick Children & RSNA Board Liaison for Science, that was both optimistic and realistic about the roles and risks of AI.

Dr. Ertl-Wagner began her keynote with a quote from Geoffrey Hinton, who famously said in 2016 that radiology was like Wile E. Coyote: “You’re already over the edge of the cliff, but you haven’t yet looked down,” and finished with a quote from the current Pope Leo XIV, who stressed the importance of humanity while calling for control, regulation, and safeguards on AI. From there, she took guests through AI implementation in healthcare and, specifically, medical imaging, including gaps that still exist, benefits and shortfalls it provides, and the challenges facing radiologists it can help tackle. She also stressed the important role radiology plays at the forefront of AI implementation in healthcare.

Dr. Ertl-Wagner finished her keynote exploring the existential threats to humanity and society posed by rapidly advancing AI, and underscored her speech with the integral role radiologists and healthcare providers have in implementing useful AI while protecting patient safety, health outcomes, and patient-centred care.

With our second annual AI in MI Networking Night now behind us, we're excited to share all the details and photos from another successful night of networking and celebrating AI in MI! This year, MI's VC, Research Dr. Kate Hanneman graciously delivered another insightful and optimistic presentation delving into the hidden risk of under-reliance on correct AI, the different ways it has been integrated successfully into different radiology divisions, and how the Department of Medical Imaging at U of T is fairing against other prestigious universities in both research citations and output regarding AI – and we’re doing pretty great!

In her presentation, Dr. Hanneman also explored specific conditions where AI shows the most promise in medical imaging, including in bone health screening at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, predicting brain tumor genetics from MRI at SickKids and predicting CTEPH severity at JDMI. As well, physicians with Trillium Health Partners are deploying supports for rigorous validation of AI results and responsible implementation, and St. Michael's Hospital is working on human-AI collaboration and synergy.

Thank you so much, Dr. Hanneman, for sharing your expertise and shining a light on all the integral ways MI's sites are implementing AI for better patient outcomes.

And that's another successful AI in MI Networking Night! Our second annual night of networking and celebrating AI in MI is under our belts, and we couldn't be happier with how the evening went. This year, AI in MI focused on networking and creating connections between U of T’s renowned faculty, trainees, and industry partners at the forefront of medical imaging and artificial intelligence. The event was held at the Atrium at Ricarda’s in the heart of downtown Toronto, and featured a cocktail hour, delicious three-course meal, live band throughout the night, and a FIFA-themed photobooth.

The evening included opening remarks from MI Chair Dr. Michael Patlas, followed by a presentation from MI's VC, Research Dr. Kate Hanneman's exploring AI integration in the Department of Medical Imaging, who then presented the evening's Keynote Speaker, Dr. Birgit Ertl-Wagner, Radiologist-in-Chief, The Hospital for Sick Children & RSNA Board Liaison for Science, who's keynote took guests through the short history of AI implementation in healthcare as well as radiology's important role at the forefront of AI in healthcare.

Thank you to this year's AI in MI Networking Night Sponsors.
