Todd Rundgren, in several interviews, was asked about his songwriting process: He claimed that he never knew what he was doing, that he just laid down one track at a time starting with drums. Obviously he had a pattern in mind, intro/verse/chorus/middle 8/etc but S**T!!!, album after album he produced amazing results!

Most of his records were engineered, produced and orchestrated by him, solely. They were created wayyyyyy before computers were the ”go to studio” which meant that you threw some mics on a drum kit and had at it. You laid down some beats, listened back and adjusted. I tell my students all the time thst mic placement is essential for a hood recording.

Let’s back up though. Not only did Todd understand this but he was also writing songs on the fly. A true wizard, a true star!
