A Savage and Beautiful Country

A favourite exercise of mine is to challenge my clients as follows:

Name three things you’ll take away from your marriage for which you are grateful.

Name something valuable that you’ve learned from your marriage.

Name three positive attributes of your former partner.

Marriage may start and end in mystery, but that savage and beautiful country lies in between. Rather than feeling regret, how might we move through this transition with gratitude, forgiveness, and grace?

In my Divorce Coaching practice, I often encourage breathwork and meditation as a form of self-care. Not only does it have an incredible calming effect on our nervous system, meditation has been shown to promote a better sense of clarity that continues throughout the rest of our day.

When we approach the challenges in our lives from a place of greater calm & clarity, we’re better able to make the types of decisions that will benefit, rather than hinder, our future selves.

This is perhaps one of the single biggest benefits I see when my clients are diligent about their self-care. When they feel rested and well supported they have the energy reserves to be diligent about thinking through each and every decision that comes their way, seeking out the appropriate experts and gaining the information they need to make the best choices they can in their circumstances.

And this is where I thrive: in support of my clients as they begin to plant the seeds necessary to create a bigger and brighter future for themselves and their children.

Would you benefit from my support as you navigate your first time away from your child? I'm here to help.

How do you feel about expressive writing?

To me, there’s nothing quite as therapeutic as writing. For so many of my clients, I find myself recommending this practice whether it’s daily, weekly or whenever the mood may strike. It can be just the life raft that many people need while experiencing the trauma and loss of divorce.

I’ve included some prompts in this post, but these are just ideas. The most important part about journaling is to be completely open, honest, un-edited and free throughout the process. The hope is to release some of the intensity of our emotion, to press pen to paper and exhale, let go and allow the healing.

For many of my clients, this is the very first time they’re stepping into the overwhelm of the divorce arena. It’s essential that they arm themselves with an understanding of what lies ahead and what challenges/issues they’ll face.

Many times I find myself speaking with individuals at the very precipice of divorce, or the contemplation phase. It’s in this phase when I’m able to help them understand what types of issues they may wish to discuss and questions they may wish to ask when first interviewing potential divorce lawyers. In this way, I’m able to help them focus in on the essential elements and phase out some of the unnecessary (& costly) noise that may seep into these professional conversations.

If you’d like help getting prepared to speak with your divorce lawyer, let’s set up a time to chat.

The reason I chose to create my Divorce Coaching business around the concept of Divorcing Well is that I believe that maintaining our health & wellness is at the core of achieving our goals in all areas of life – including the creation of a more peaceful and successful outcome in separation and divorce.

When managing the myriad challenges and difficulties that divorce can present, it can make a world of difference to foster a sense of optimum well-being. To this end, I regularly work with my clients to help them put into practice the healthy behaviours and practices that will enable them to create the type of divorce process that is not only in their best interest but also the best interest of their children, extended family and friends.

One of the biggest challenges I see in my practice is when my clients are involved in an extremely contentious, high-conflict divorce with their spouse. This usually involves one or more high-conflict personalities and/or a high-conflict set of circumstances or situation.

No matter why you may find yourself entangled in this type of divorce, it’s imperative that you learn the requisite survival skills to see you through to the other side. This involves knowing how to communicate with a high-conflict personality, knowing how (and when) to take a step back when they become bullying, and how to make yourself and your self-care a priority.

Are you struggling to keep your sanity through a high-conflict divorce? Would you like some help and support to survive the situation?
