Communication can be tricky and nuanced.
Sometimes people/ companies will look for any *valid* reason to say no, because the real reason is unprofessional/ inappropriate, or it's based on a personal feeling/bias that they can't justify.
Effortless Education
Online English speaking classes for adult learners who want to successfully live and work in Canada.
โญ๏ธ If your issue is a knowledge gap, there is so much awesome FREE information available on the internet.
๐ But if you need someone to help you actually apply that information and give you feedback so you feel more confident and capable, a coach is invaluable.
I prefer not to translate for my ESL clients unless I feel it's necessary, so every now and then, I find myself explaining an expression we use in English. Now you can use this expression in your next interview if it applies. ๐
If you have an interview coming up, prepare ahead of time for behavioural questions like this ("describe a time when you solved a problem under pressure") so you avoid stumbling over your answer and can wow the interviewer instead.

Let's talk about INTERVIEWS. ๐ฃ๏ธ
As professionals, we've all experienced interviews that went well aaaand not-so-well. ๐
Whether a company is:
๐ฃ asking you to tell them about yourself and your background,
๐ฃ asking why you want to work with them, OR
๐ฃ asking you to describe a time you had a specific work challenge/task (like analyzing a large dataset or correcting an error with a client),
we all have that one question we hate answering. ๐ฉ
Which is it for you? Comment and tell me which one and why you dislike that (type of) question. ๐ฌ
(to dread (transitive verb): to feel worried or anxious about something that has not happened yet.)

Actually the right answer was "All of the above"... which wasn't one of the options. I told you it was a trick question! ๐
But of course for the purpose of the Speak Data podcast, we're going with definition B. โจ๏ธ
Did you get the right answer? Well in Friday's episode we'll be talking about how to effectively participate in a stand-up meeting. ๐ง
Make sure you're subscribed on YouTube or following on any major podcasting platform so you don't miss our "stand-up" episode. ๐

What's the right answer? ๐ค Feel free to google it! ๐
Whatever stand-ups are, we'll be talking about them in Friday's episode of Speak Data. ๐
(I'll reveal the true answer on Wednesday. ๐)

Truth and Reconciliation. We know the dictionary definitions. But functionally, what does that look like? I've been thinking about that today.
I amplify Indigenous content creators and occasionally send an email to my MP/MPP/Premier/PM when instructed, but I'm sure I could be doing more.
This isn't an ask, per se, as I know it's on me, but if any of my Indigenous connections would like to share suggestions of what more I can be doing to help make Truth and Reconciliation a real thing, I welcome your thoughts.
Thank you

"I feel like I'm not getting any better!"
I hear this a lot in my work, and one of my students said it to me a couple of weeks ago.
Have you ever felt this way about your English learning journey?
You're always practicing, watching movies in English, going to language exchange events, listening to songs and podcasts in English, carrying around a vocabulary notebook and rehearsing 20+ words every day...
But you still feel like you can't have a conversation with your English-speaking co-workers or deliver an engaging presentation to your team.
Don't worry, you're not alone in this feeling!
But why do you think you aren't making progress?
Is it because you can't see the progress? ๐ย
Okay, let's take a step back. Close your eyes (but not really because you need to read the next part).
Think about seeds.
When you plant a seed, you bury it in soil, right?ย
Then, you water it to keep it nourished. ๐ง
You could be doing this for days or even weeks without seeing any change at all.ย
You may even start to wonder why the heck you're still just watering dirt!
What you can't see, though, is that it isn't *just* dirt because...
The first things to grow are the ROOTS!
It's only once the roots are sufficiently stable that you start to see any progress above ground. ๐ฑ
In fact, without roots, that little seedling would fall over like a piece of paper at the first gust of wind! ๐ฌ ๐ย
Solid, healthy roots will keep you going strong as long as you take care of them.
So when you feel like you're not making any progress, remember that THE ROOTS GROW FIRST!ย
As you go into the new year, know that you're becoming firmly rooted and keep pushing upward. โ๐พ
All the best for 2024 and happy learning! ๐ฉ๐พโ๐ซ
