Ontario has proposed new legislation that would tie attendance and class participation to students’ final grades — with up to 15% of marks based on showing up to class. 😳

The goal is to address rising absenteeism since the pandemic... but not everyone is convinced it’s the right approach.

Some people say it could unfairly impact students dealing with mental health challenges, chronic illness, or difficult home situations — and may even widen existing gaps.

Do you think this is an effective solution… or the wrong move? 👀👇

🤔 In a recent response to disconcerting statistics on student attendance in Ontario high schools, the Ontario Ministry of Education has suggested assigning 10-15% of the final mark to attendance and participation. Although this may increase attendance in some instances, we believe that fostering relationships is the key to student engagement and that this proposed approach is overly simplistic and requires more comprehensive solutions.

We would love to hear what you think. Feel free to post in the comments.
