Here is another great talk I had with an interesting and dynamic individual who is getting the most out of retirement. On this episode of “Squeezing All The Juice Out Of Retirement” I spoke with Gary Ward, Gary emphasizes the importance of participating, volunteering, “congregating”, and “signing up” as a means of socializing and meeting interesting new people in your post-work career. Keeping with this month’s theme of sharing some of the conversations I have had on my podcast “Squeezing All The Juice Out Of Retirement” I want to present an interview with Jim Abram. After 30 years in the oil and gas industry, Jim stepped back briefly before redirecting his energies and diving in to help seniors who needed help. Often, he says, they won’t ask; so he just does it. He now advocates for them both politically and socially, and receives great satisfaction from doing so. This month I wanted to spend some time sharing some of the great conversations I have had with people who are Squeezing All the Juice out of Retirement. Here we have an interview I did with Jan Rose a person who doesn’t miss a beat! She serves as a volunteer on the executive of not one but two community organizations, she plays in not one but two community concert bands, she works part-time, she drives an all-electric vehicle and she travels. She says the days just aren’t long enough for her to accomplish all she wants to! Take a moment to listen over on the podcast “Squeezing All The Juice Out Of Retirement” here or wherever you get your podcasts.

Part of retirement is no longer having to fill your days with the work that comes along with a career. The problem is often then what to fill your days with. We can’t spend all our time volunteering or golfing; sometimes it is nice to work on a hobby. For some of us we may have never had the time or the energy to pick up a hobby between work and raising a family. This article from the New York Times is a fun little guide on how to find a hobby: something you enjoy doing that is also active and productive. Enjoy.

For those that haven’t, might I suggest taking a look at my YouTube channel. It is a mix of my podcast interviews and some discussions on the Four Phases Of Retirement. I like to think of it as a valuable resource for those in retirement and those that are close to retirement. If you are looking for something to watch and listen to, why not spend some time learning about retirement and how to squeeze all the juice out of it?

Settling into summer is a time to relax and reflect. The past few years have been hectic and may have left you feeling displaced or vulnerable. It was just blow after blow with no time to adjust to how fast things were changing. Sometimes life is slow and sometimes it comes at us all at once. That feeling of being unmoored is a lot like when we enter retirement. A time that is supposed to be relaxing can really be difficult as we are faced with a new phase of life and all the new challenges it brings. This part of retirement is not talked about enough and is what inspired me to write my best-selling book “The Four Phases of Retirement”. In the book we look at solutions to this feeling of displacement that comes with retirement.

If you are looking for something to read at the cottage this year might I suggest a book that is informative yet easy to digest? I am, of course, talking about my own best-selling work “The Four Phases of Retirement”. I may be biased but I really do think this short yet informative read is an important one. Especially if you are near retirement or in retirement and feeling lost. Take a look and if you are unsure might I suggest watching this recording of the seminar of the same name. https://thefourphases.com/the-workshop/

Looking for something to do? The summer weather tends to have us all seeking to be a little more active...something that has been difficult due to the pandemic. In the heat, there is also always the risk of heat exhaustion and over-exertion, so take it easy out there! If you are looking for some safe and socially distant activities to fill in the longer days, this article from Chartwell Retirement Residences has some great examples. I particularly like the idea of a “Victory Garden”, especially as it looks like we are finally nearing the finish line of this pandemic.
