You don't need more vocabulary or grammar rules. You need more context on what they already know. With the right context, you gain confidence to practice, make mistakes, and gain experience to master Chinese. Too many learners focus on studying more and practicing too little.

I’ve tried lots of different Chinese learning programs over the years but I haven’t seen any that use real-world Chinese material so I decided to

Nerves make us speak faster, hindering clear thinking and articulation.
Instead, pause & slow down your speech to refocus.
Your listener will also appreciate your thoughtfulness

Many learners try to improve their speaking by learning more vocab or more grammar lessons without applying.
But this is like putting a bandage on the problem—it makes you feel better, but you’re not fixing the root problem.
Accumulating vocabulary is like accumulating more tools in the toolbox but if you don’t know what your problem is, they remain unused in your toolbox and without use, they malfunction.
This is wasted effort and time.
Tools are useful when there is a problem. Vocabulary is useful when you have a message you want to communicate or something you want to say.
But how do I know what to talk about?
Instead of looking for vocabulary, look for interesting problems to solve, and the right vocabulary will reveal itself naturally.
During my training to become a medical doctor, we learned about the power of PBL, or problem-based learning.
Problem-based learning has been shown by many studies to be more effective than lecture-based learning in improving knowledge, social and communication skills, problem-solving, self-learning, and student satisfaction.
We learn best when we have a tangible problem to direct our learning and apply what we’ve learned.
This means picking a particular problem, topic, or question that you want to talk about and focusing your learning on that.
Here are some questions that help me:
Which topics am I passionate about and interested in?
Are there questions that people ask me all the time?
Are there topics that I often struggle to talk about?
Is there a topic that I have a controversial opinion about?
If you struggle with speaking, then the answers to these questions are often obvious. You already have an interesting problem to work towards.
Now you just need to do it.
Remember, speaking and languages at its core are a tool for communication.
It's not about how many compliments you get (or don’t get) about your pronunciation. Speaking is not a performance. It’s about how well you can communicate your points when you need to. And you can do it effectively without knowing a ton of vocabulary.

I remember practicing Mandarin on the streets of Taiwan, chatting with shopkeepers at the fresh market. I would say, 'Sorry, my Chinese isn’t very good,' to take the pressure off myself to sound perfect.
This made it easier to try new words without fear of judgment.
It also helped break the ice and made the conversation more relaxed and natural
When you speak to express, there’s no winning or losing—everything is a win. When you speak to play, explore, and learn, even what society calls “failure” becomes a victory.
This mindset helped me build a daily speaking habit in Chinese that skyrocketed my Mandarin Speaking. I went from just collecting Chinese vocabulary to immediately applying what I learned in conversations.
Think back to when you were a kid, lost in the joy of creating. Maybe you built towering castles from blocks, drew wild creatures with crayons, or made up songs just to hear your own voice fill the air.
Back then, you weren’t chasing perfection or approval—you were simply playing, exploring, and expressing yourself, fully immersed in the moment.
You can’t control how others will think, but you can control how you show up every single day.
When you create for the sake of expression, play, and self-discovery, learning becomes intrinsically valuable. You’ll find yourself doing it not for external rewards, but because it brings you joy and growth.

I used to be shy and get so anxious speaking (even in English). Learning a new language helped me become comfortable with making mistakes and care less about what others think. Learning a new language healed my anxiety.
If you're new to a language, nobody knows you can speak it. You have to prove it before people will listen. Speak up. Make mistakes. Use the language in public. Do everything you can to immerse yourself. All it takes is one real conversation to change everything.
You can just start speaking. You don’t need permission. You don’t need to wait until you're “ready.” You can stop overthinking, right now, and start using the language. Your mind will try to keep you in your comfort zone, but you don’t have to listen.
The 2 hours you spend scrolling each day (or 730 hours each year) could have given you fluency, confidence, and conversations that matter to you in your dream language.
Fluency doesn't happen overnight; it's something you train. Notice when you hesitate, and push through repeatedly until speaking feels natural. Many haven't developed this habit, and they aren't as comfortable in the language as they believe.
You’re already good at languages. You just aren’t in a language-immersive environment. You don’t live a language-acquisition lifestyle. You’re stuck translating in your head (limited input = limited output), trying to “memorize” your way to fluency. It doesn’t work that way.
