"A lot of people in this space try and serve too many different types of clients and they actually don't get results for their clients.
And then it just makes it even harder to market because you don't have good stats to share, case studies of clients who actually benefitted from the service, or a clear understanding of the result you got them.
You don't have really good case studies and you can't also put together resources to attract other clients to further your services or get more market share or deepen your expertise because you haven't proven that to the people you're already working with."
"You don't really want to be like a, like they say, like jack of all trades, master of none.
So if you're biting off more than you can chew and you want to do everything and then you actually end up doing nothing at all, literally nothing at all."

You can still love your lifestyle content without making that you identify or the specific market you service. It's not different enough anymore to stand out.
There's a HUGE gap in the market for shopify service providers to dig into that are SO much more fun problems to solve, people to help, and styles to make yourself the go-to person to help solve problems.
3 of the MANY that no one seems to be able to tap-into as much as they could:
1️⃣ Pet market (how FUN!) Medicine, food, perishables, fashion, toys, gift boxes, subscriptions, and more. There's huge following, exposure, community, and interesting problems that you need to know specific marketing tactics, different creative styles, or apps that solve those problems.
2️⃣ Adult industry. From toys, to wellness, to certain "interest"s that are, kinda hard to sell without getting shadow-banned, mass reported, or straight up blocked by the platforms they try to operate on. There is BIG BIG money in this industry and so many service providers are essentially too shy to deal with more mature subject matter or lewd content of businesses that actually have a lot of liquid cash to move to scale their business.
3️⃣ The automotive industry. I'm sure I'm not alone in knowing at least 1 person in my life who has an obsession with fixing up cars or even their retro bicycle. There is a massive upcycling and new parts markets for people with any vehicle that moves them and needs repair, upgrades or kits to looks super personalized. With that comes an insane amount of highly-experiences content writing, content organization, complex builds, and apps that power the search and discovery needs of these business's websites.
Let me know in the comments - what cool industries have you seen on Shopify recently that would be an interesting client to work with?

There are too many people out there offering theme design and build for businesses, and that's why you are having trouble booking clients.
Ever since Shopify Online Store 2.0 was released last year we've seen an across-industry HUGE decline in design and build projects being booked by agencies, studios and freelancers worldwide.
The Reason?
As the platform makes it easier for merchants to DIY their themes, the value of you being able to do that as a services declines EXPONENTIALLY.
Sure there will always be people willing to trade their money for YOUR time to do so. But you will continue to be fighting against the current on the market trend.
The next thing you can do to differentiate in this space?
Know the problems of your niche and develop an opinionated app stack to solve those operation, marketing, fulfillment, or acquisition problems online.
Knowing your clients apps and problems means that you can more easily market, systemize and deliver high-value services that solve real problems and get clients rea results BEYOND making things look pretty.
That's what we mean by going beyond the theme.
It's time to be known for something more than being a theme designer. That's not special enough anymore and probably the reason you are stuck in a feast or famine.
What are some interesting client niche requests you've delivered on lately that you think are underserved?

When I log in to Instagram on Sunday, and I see you all busting your behinds on client projects on your weekends, I get so bummed out.
Friends, if there's 1 lens I want you to look at your online business through: if you stop working and the business stops booking clients, delivering work, and making money, you don't have a business. You have an expensive hobby.
Expensive in the fact that:
1. If you get sick you will be paying out of pocket for your software
2. If you have a bad day you have to work on Saturday to deliver a project because you risk getting into a chargeback or refund situation with an unhappy client
3. You are working FAR more hours than you're being paid for
4. You count "profit" as the salary you pay yourself but there's nothing left over for your company to grow
Our industry is so beautiful in the fact that if you're willing to invest, people will help you. But you have to be able to decide that never working on weekends again is a non-negotiable in your plan to make a more sustainable lifestyle business.
Being a company of 1 doesn't mean you have to do everything yourself.
Why are you working this weekend and what do you wish you were doing instead?

Other courses that teach you to build from 1 shiny template has Shopify all wrong.
Using a single template for all your learnings pigeon holes you into designing the same solution for every brand - watering down the Shopify ecosystem which was built to solve the problems of every type of eCommerce business. 1 template cannot solve the problems of a million different types of business owners in industries like:
• Pet food and accessories
• Gyms with online booking systems
• Retailers with Perishable goods
• High SKU stores with rotating collections
• and so many more
The beauty of the Shopify ecosystem is being able to pull from the wide variety of templates out there and make it unique for each business needs.
In the Shopify Code(x) I teach more than just learning liquid well enough to tweak 1 template. And it’s more than a coding course.
Be able to open the files of any theme and know what is going on (because every theme is authored completely differently from organization to documentation to strategies of setting up menus).
Plus you will have a MASSIVE resource library on:
• Manipulating store taxonomy for unique use cases
• Collecting content and copy seamlessly
• learning to scope project profitable and hold your scope boundaries
• How to delegate operations of a Shopify Studio
• NEW app integrations and partnerships that I recommend with cheat sheets on selling and copy/paste snippets
But this isn’t just a coding course. I teach you how to lead an end to end client experience so you can offer Shopify with confidence.
Plus if you’re not interested in coding, you’ll love the revamped lessons starting Sep 19 on how to Design, Delegate Development and then Decompress.
The Shopify Code(x) opens on Monday at noon EST and it $2,497 with payment plans available.

If you’re offering more custom Shopify experiences for the first time - chances are you have already had a project where you start designing (or you get alllll the way into development) and all of a sudden.
The scope gets
—————-T H IIIIII S B IIIII GGG ————–
out of nowhere.
Even though: You were so clear about the # of pages you’d mock up in the proposal, right? The client gave you some site examples that you assumed would be close to the end result, right?
But then, suddenly the client goes:
“Oh, I had this idea…”
“I thought this was just obvious that it would do __”
“I said ___ was important to me, how was that a miscommunication?
“We NEED __ or we can’t launch”
“Oh we missed this, it’s easy enough to just put it in, right?”
The list goes on and on.
You get to the end of the project and realize you made about $0.50 an hour accommodating all these requests because, well whoops must have been my bad right?
How about NO.
Discovery workshops or a second inquiry call can help fix this.
The simple fix for this, is having your merchant be open to giving you more details out of the gate and being comfortable with the “unknowns” coming down the road being EXTRA scope to be quoted separately.
Scoping is one of the most import topics we cover inside the codex through every life stage of a project.
If you’re curious and want a taste - visit the link in our bio to download the freebie and see what you’re missing in potential new leads.
If you want to build a sustainable studio, I want you to learn to Design your services to Delegate, then Decompress.
If you're a Designer, Developer or Studio Owner with a $150K Yearly Projection and want to add your first team member or grow to >250k, this is for you.

When I first started developing on Shopify I was both excited by how easy it was to maintain templates, and create stores for entrepreneurs. There's truly no other product on the market that is beautiful and functional, while being extendable to any unique business model. Shopify is made with merchants in mind, to make it easy to run a business selling products.
But - it isn't made with developers or designers in mind like Squarespace. Actually... if i'm being honest it's kind of a nightmare to develop for Shopify if you don't know what you're doing.
I remember developing my first custom designed store back in 2016. Product pages were rigid. Home pages were cookie-cutter. Adding anything as simple as a popup was (and still is) a development nightmare to get the store owner to maintain. The only solution was apps on top of apps on top of apps.
In fact that’s a problem I see commonly - relying on apps to DO EVERYTHING for even a simple semi custom fix.
A lot of designers and developers out there are making stores that had to be dismantled entirely with a wrecking ball anytime the business needs even the most simple update.
The Shopify Codex was designed to help you:
✨ Understand how to run a profitable eCommerce design service with a lean team
✨ Help your clients create profitable online stores
✨ Give you the knowledge you need to be an expert
✨ Make your work bullet-proof and last longer for your client
✨ Make developing on Shopify FUN and rewarding
