While algebra may sound intimidating, the reality is that kids are practising and applying their understanding early on without even knowing it!
This patterning problem for example, helps initiate algebraic thinking by asking kids to think about the growing pattern in a general sense (how is the pattern growing?)
The extension to this problem allows for kids to solve for the pattern rule (solving for the next consecutive number in the pattern) or the pattern relationship (which requires kids to make connections between two data sets- term number and term value) making this a great problem with many entry points for kids!

That’s a wrap on another school year!
Remember that learning isn’t confined to the walls of the classroom! Summer is the prefect time to capitalize on authentic learning experiences coupled with nature and a less hectic schedule.
Here are some tips:
☀️ Get baking and have your child explore fractions and ratios and how they apply to real life
☀️Encourage the entrepreneur in your child and have them start planning, designing and budgeting for their small business idea (e.g.
bracelet stand, neighbourhood lemonade stand)
☀️Keep children reading by having them explore new genres of books on long road trips
☀️Taking a trip? Have your child write letters or keep a journal of new activities or places visited
Need help with creating fun and engaging learning activities for your child this summer? Reach out to us today- our team is ready to help!

Let’s set the record straight- the purpose of an IEP is to help students with exceptionalities reach their full potential and make learning more accessible. They are not designed to hinder a student’s plan for attending a postsecondary institution.
Want to learn more about the important role that your child’s IEP has when transitioning to a postsecondary institution? Check out our latest blog post.

Now more than ever we need to be explicitly teaching our kids how to disagree effectively and respectfully.
It is not enough to assume that kids already know how to disagree or that they will be able to learn how to do this effectively with age.
Instead, we must be intentional about the following:
1. PRACTICE: Provide opportunities where kids are encouraged to disagree.
2. PROMPTS: Give kids the language on what to say when they disagree
3. NONVERBAL: Discuss how body language and tone of voice influence the conversation
4. MODEL: What does it look like and sound like in the real world? Provide real world examples on how to disagree effectively and respectfully.
Whether in the classroom, or at home around the dinner table, helping kids learn the art of disagreeing is one that will fare them well throughout their life.

Executive Functions are the basic building blocks that facilitate success in and out of the classroom.
Is your child struggling in school? It may not be a result of the curriculum. Rather, the difficulty may be from struggling with executive functions.
Our team can help pinpoint where the problem is and recommend and implement the appropriate solutions.

What better way to end the week then with a math problem!
This week's math problem requires students to interpret the problem and justify their choice based on their understanding of concepts relating to science and math.
