Telling a child to do something because you said so robs them of their autonomy, ironically displacing responsibility for their behaviour onto you (instead of helping them learn how to decide the right course of action for themselves).

You can train yourself to put emotions (Cam) in their place, and propel your rational self (Leo) to the driver's seat of your brain and behaviour. Or you can let emotions rue the day and suffer the consequences.

So often, we get triggered by someone else’s heightened emotions. If someone is freaking out, especially when it’s directed at us, we tend to escalate our emotional response, and calibrate our emotions to theirs. But, we can (and should) choose instead to not let others’ emotional states to “infect” ours.

When we teach kids to obey, particularly at the expense of their autonomy, we rob them of the opportunity to build confidence, and the opportunity to do the right thing for the right reasons.

The emotional landscape is a fickle one - we all experience the ups and downs of emotions, every day. That's human. The key is in not attaching too much to any fleeting feeling and to try to stay flexible by realizing that no matter how intense the emotion is at the time, it will pass.
