The biggest decision I ever made had no pros and cons list. No second opinion. No evidence. I never even told anyone I was making it.
It was New Year's Eve. I was visiting my brother in New York City. He was working that night, then heading out with friends, so it was just me and the city hum through the window.
I was in my early thirties. A high school dropout. Sixteen years into life as a working musician. And I was completely broken. I had no idea what I was doing with my life, and every way I'd tried to figure it out had just spun me in circles.
So that night, I stopped trying. I sat on the bed in his guest room with my guitar and got quiet. Not thinking. Just playing, singing, being still.
And out of the quiet, four things came to me, clear as anything. Go back to Toronto. Get a job. Go to the dentist. Go back to school.
Four plain, unglamorous things. My whole body knew they were right before my head could argue. So I did all four.
Seven years later, I had a Master's degree in counselling psychology.
I've spent over twenty years since sitting across from women who are stuck in the exact same place I was, and I've watched the same thing happen over and over.
The head can only take you so far. At a certain point, you have to stop thinking and just listen.
I wrote the whole story in this week's Substack article. If something in this sounds like you, I'd love for you to read it → https://lisagarber.substack.com/p/the-day-i-finally-listened-to-myself
