You know what you want, even if you don’t.

It’s easy to figure out what we don’t want in our lives, all of the things that leave us feeling tired, disconnected, bored, fearful, angry, overwhelmed, etc. No one wants those feelings.

But it can feel like a lot more work to figure out what we do want. Especially if we’re busy and feel trapped by everything we think we “should” do before we indulge in what’s next. We’re told we need goals, we need plans, we need to execute on those plans… and it can feel exhausting just thinking about it.

But what if there was an easier way to start moving towards what you want that didn’t feel like adding to your to-do list?

Because you already have some of the answers. You know what direction you want to move in:
You want to feel energized.
You want to feel connected.
You want to feel engaged.
You want to feel certainty.
You want to give a s**t.
Right?

No one has ever joined our program because they want to be more tired, lonely, disengaged, doubtful, and ambivalent.

Of course the details, the scale are going to look different for everyone, but ultimately when we set out to change something it’s because we want to go towards those positive feelings. Even if it’s indirectly or there are a few steps along the way.

And here’s the thing; Sometimes when we don’t know the details of what we want, we forget that we do know what direction we want to head in.

Fortunately, there are always small steps that we can take to move in that direction, even if you don’t have a big shiny goal and a 10 step plan. And you can start to feel the way you want to feel sooner. You don’t need to wait until you set a goal and execute a plan to feel more like yourself at your best.

If you start by aligning the little day-to-day things in your life, one at a time, the big things will follow. And if you keep going, you will be more energized, connected, engaged, certain, and be able to intentionally move towards exactly what you want.

Self-discipline isn't something hiding away waiting to be found. Self discipline isn't the result of the perfect plan or the right app.

Self-discipline is more like a muscle. You have to build it little by little using it consistently. And at first, making a decision and following through won't come naturally and it might be a little uncomfortable. But if you keep going you will get stronger and it will get easier.

The habit of following through for yourself, even when you aren't feeling motivated or in the mood can only be created through repetition.

The good news is that there are ways to make it easier to build the self-discipline muscle for any habit:
1. Expect imperfection – change is never linear or constant.
2. Start smaller than you are capable of.
3. Imagine yourself as someone with the new habit to familiarize yourself with this version of yourself.
The last one might sound fluffy to some of you but 95% of people who create lasting behavioural change begin by viscerally connecting to an idealized version of themselves.

Once you know how to build self-discipline for yourself, you can simply decide what to focus on and take action, without wasting energy worrying about how to get yourself to stay motivated and follow through.

You might not know you're a perfectionist because you think that you don't do things perfectly enough or because you're definitely not a perfectionist in some areas of your life.

Perfectionists often feel stuck because they obsess over the desire for things to feel perfect at the expense of doing the things that would move them forward.

Some common perfectionist behaviours:
- Procrastinating starting things when the outcome isn't clear
- All-or-nothing thinking
- Setting unrealistic goals
- Being more critical of yourself than others
- Not enjoy yourself until you know for sure how things will turn out
- Responding defensively to constructive criticism (even if only in your head)

Perfectionists are chasing a feeling of order and control and it's frustrating because real life is messy and unpredictable.

Mindset coaching for perfectionists focuses on two things:
1. Getting a clear understanding the tradeoff between progress and perfection and making decisions.
2. Learning to feel more safe and comfortable with imperfection.
3. Reprogramming your pass/fail fixed scarcity mindset into a growth abundance mindset.

In 2023, she’s looking for joy in her work and her skills, starting with the translation of a series of romance novels for a popular e-book publisher.

I used to think that I had to be hard on myself because I knew I could improve, and that self-acceptance and self-compassion were not particularly practical, just feel-good fluffy stuff for people to address in therapy. I was wrong.

The thing is, the negative impact of self-judgement actually makes it more difficult to change what you aren't satisfied with.

It's a little counter-intuitive at first, but you can demand a lot from yourself and expect yourself to do hard things while simultaneously practicing self-compassion and self-acceptance. This is going to save you from so much exhausting mind drama and leave you with more time and energy to get on with things.

Our thoughts are habitual, and all of these things are about building new thought habits that better serve you. The first step is building awareness of our thoughts and the impact they are having, and the second step is learning to redirect our thoughts. Research has shown that self-compassion and self-acceptance can be trained through mindfulness-based interventions and this is associated with changes in brain activity and improved emotional well-being.

Overthinking Keeps You Stuck

It's "overthinking" when the thinking is no longer helping you and when one of the following occurs:
1. It keeps you from taking action or making a decision.
2. It stops you from being present in the moment.
3. It's calcifying assumptions or beliefs that are keeping you stuck.

It happens when you don't want to accept something about the situation that you can't change or you don't want to accept that some things are impossible to predict or control.

To break the bad habit of overthinking you need to learn to trust yourself. Take a step back and access the creative part of your brain (this cannot be used at the same time that you are using the problem-solving part of your brain). The easiest way to begin is to imagine what you want long-term. From there you can put things in perspective and accept that there are unknowns and imperfections and that it doesn't mean that anything has gone wrong.
