Hello! Iโm ๐๐๐ซ๐ฆ๐๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฌ๐ญ, a former public school Art and Music teacher. I left the public system to be present for my own family, and started ๐
๐ซ๐๐ ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ๐ฒ so kids could explore the arts without pressure, and with lots of holistic, experiential learning. I teach in small groups where every child gets attention and encouragementโespecially those who learn best by doing. What Iโve loved most about teaching is seeing students grow and develop their creative, curious minds. Working with students who have special needs has been especially rewarding: theyโre often the forgotten ones in the typical brick-and-mortar system, but when given opportunities to learn in ways tailored to them, their successes are especially exciting!
I began with lofty dreams of a place where kids grow up in my music and art programs, from early childhood to high school. I named my business ๐
๐ซ๐๐ ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ๐ฒ to embody a space where kids can explore the arts free from judgment and confined expectations about creativity and skill development. I also wanted the name to stay open-ended for subject matter and ageโwhat if I offer drama, dance, or creative writing someday? What if I teach adults? I needed a name that covers all my bases and allows for growth without a name change.
The homeschooling world is new to me. Kudos to all of you who teach your own childrenโmy son and I arenโt a good personality match for the daily grind. Heโs thriving in public school, and Iโm thankful for that; I know thatโs not the reality for many children. We live on a farm SE of Benalto, and as much as Iโd love to build my school right here at home, itโs not ideal for having lots of kids around because of the large machinery that comes and goes most of the year. So, Iโm at the ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ in ๐๐ฒ๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ง ๐๐๐ค๐ which is an awesome fit! I want to see my students every week, watch them grow and develop, and witness their excitement over new ideas, skills, experiences, and achievements!
My big idea that Iโm so excited to share is a ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐ญ ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ก๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐ฌ. There are so many ways to explore music and art together: create and mix your own music and design the album cover; make a stop-motion animation music video; explore world cultures through their traditional music and artistry; or connect music and art to any topicโMath, Language Arts, Social Studies, or Science! One of the best ways for a child to learn is through hands-on experiences! Instead of learning poetry on its own, connect it to song lyrics! When studying story development, explore how music and art shape the readerโs experience in books, plays, or movies! Instead of just studying vibrations and sound in science, experience them with music! When learning about Indigenous peoples, practice their styles of painting, beading, or drumming! If your child is struggling with fractions, make them relatable with music; or bring geometry to life with art! The options are limitless! This is what my current program, ๐
๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐ญ ๐
๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง, is about. Once a month, I co-host the ๐๐ข๐๐ค๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ฎ๐ฆโ๐ฌ ๐ก๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฆ, designed around this concept! Itโs been well received, and Iโm building this at my home studio in Sylvan Lake too. ๐

๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง is best experienced in person with a groupโdefinitely not online, on paper, or alone.
My first group of classes is coming up quickly, and Iโm eager to share them! Iโve kept costs low, and my space can accommodate 12 studentsโideal for more individual attention and an enriched experience. I made three homeschool โcoursesโ with four classes each: a brief commitment, but enough time to develop a learning continuum. For younger students, the session is divided into two halves: the first hour is music, followed by a break (snack, playground time), then 1.5 hours of art (longer due to cleanup). My favourite part is that the two classes share a common theme: for ages 6โ8, itโs world cultures; for ages 9โ11, itโs stories and storytelling. Students can enrol in just music OR art, but the best experience is doing both! For teens (12+), itโs a 2-hour class (also four classes total) where they create their own stop-motion animation music videoโ and no prior knowledge is required!
If this is successful, Iโll offer classes again in the new year with new themes! I hope learning a bit about me and where Iโm coming from piques your interest. Give Free Spirits Creative Academy a tryโIโm eager to share the arts with you and your kids! Please let me know if you have any questions, and if you have ideas or comments on how to help ๐

*Music and Art are connected on the same theme so learning sticks!
*No pressure or judgement on young minds and creativity!
*Small groups = more individual feedback and a supportive vibe.
*Inclusive teaching; I love working with diverse learners and adapting projects and lessons so every child can succeed.
