Private coaching for beginners and everyday people who want to get fit and strong without the chaos of public gyms

You know who you are!... to the rest of ya...get in here!!! you could be one of us; join the fricken crew!!

It starts with belief. Most of us feel stuck, like we are doomed, doomed to get old, outta shape, and never be able to do the things we used to. We believe we are what we are, and we can't change. We put limits on what we are capable of. Stop it!! Start believing in growth, in change, and in yourself. See what happens.

Become Unreasonably Capable

Alright, I'm going to run this one while the weather lets me.

The idea is pretty simple: we're going to train to become unreasonably capable.

Lift heavy things. Carry heavy things. Run. Jump. Push. Pull. Move fast. Get strong. Get fit. Do things that are a little uncomfortable.

Yes, you'll probably build some muscle and drop some fat along the way, but that's not really the point. The point is becoming the kind of person who can handle s**t.

And since we're in Manitoba and apparently winter is inevitable, I'm going to run this while we still have decent weather. Maybe that's two months. Maybe we stretch it a little longer and start dressing for it. 😂

I'm not really sure what the format is going to look like yet.

Maybe it's one-on-one.

Maybe a few of us train together.

Maybe we do a bit of both.

Maybe it turns into a little community of people who want to get ridiculously capable together.

We'll figure it out.

If you're interested, let me know. You can jump in whenever and we'll figure out what makes sense for you.

I'll be running it regardless. Might as well come suffer with me

It's a slippery slope, folks!

Dig a Deeper Well

Most people think they want to lose weight, gain muscle, or fit into an old pair of jeans.

Those are goals, and they're good ones.

But underneath all of that, I think we're chasing something much simpler.

We want to feel good.

We want more energy.
More patience.
More resilience.
We want life to feel a little less heavy.

I don't think most people are lazy.

I think a lot of us are running on empty.

Imagine your physical, mental, and emotional energy as a well.

Everything draws from it.

Your job.
Your kids.
Your stress.
Poor sleep.
Anxiety.
Making decisions all day.
Pain.
Illness.

By the time evening rolls around, the well is almost dry.

You know the feeling.

Then someone tells you to "find more motivation."

The problem isn't always motivation.

Sometimes your well just isn't deep enough.

Here's the interesting part.

Strength training is hard.
Cardio is hard.

They require energy...

..yet people who do them consistently almost always say they have more energy.

Why?

Because they aren't just spending energy.

They're increasing their capacity.

You're building a bigger engine.

A stronger body is easier to live in.

A healthier heart makes everyday life feel less demanding.

The things that used to drain you don't take as much out of you anymore.

You're digging a deeper well.

I think that's what fitness is really about.

Not becoming someone else.

Removing the limitations that keep the person you already are from showing up.

The goal isn't to spend your life surviving each day.

It's to build enough capacity that you can actually enjoy it.

Dig a deeper well.

What's the difference between being sore and being injured from heavy lifting?

It's the morning after leg day. You wake up, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, and as you attempt to use your legs, something sends signals to your brain telling you to ABORT MISSION.

But nature calls.

So, like a penguin or a zombie that can't bend its knees, you shuffle to the bathroom, wincing and possibly muttering a few curses about your personal trainer along the way. As you sit there wondering how in the heck you're ever going to stand back up, because your legs are so sore, you can't help but feel accomplished.

The pain says, "Good job." And you shall be rewarded handsomely with beefy leg gains.

But there is another type of pain that can result from lifting heavy weights, and unlike muscle soreness, it has no benefit: injury.

Injuries can be minor, severe, or anything in between. They can happen suddenly during a workout or develop gradually over time. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference between the good soreness of training and the bad soreness of injury, but there are some clues.

An acute injury usually occurs immediately, or at least during the training session itself. Muscle soreness, on the other hand, typically begins several hours after the workout and often peaks a day or two later.

Muscle soreness tends to be generalized throughout a muscle group. Injury pain is often more localized to a specific area, tendon, or joint.

The sensations can also feel different. Both soreness and injury can be sharp, dull, or achy, but in my experience, DOMS doesn't usually throb the way an injury can.

Duration can provide another clue. Normal soreness gradually improves and fades within a few days. An injury may persist, worsen, or continue to interfere with movement.

Movement itself is often revealing. Soreness usually improves once you get moving and blood starts flowing. An injury often becomes more painful when stressed, although not always.

It's also worth remembering that injuries don't always happen all at once. Many develop gradually. As a trainee, you need to become attuned to the signals your body is sending and learn when it's time to push forward, pull back, or seek professional help.

You'll experience plenty of aches and pains throughout your training journey. Most are not a big deal. Many resolve on their own and often come back stronger and more resilient.

Keep in mind that muscles recover relatively quickly compared to tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone. Your muscles may feel ready to go while other tissues are still catching up.

If you're dealing with joint or connective tissue pain, pay attention to it. That doesn't automatically mean you should stop training completely. Often, a light warm-up and some gentle movement can help you assess the situation.

Motion is lotion.

Get some blood flowing and ask yourself:

Did the pain improve or get worse?
Should today be a lighter day?
Should I modify the exercise or range of motion?
Would another exercise work better?
Should I train a different body part?
Or is today simply a day for rest and recovery?

Learning to answer those questions is part of becoming a smarter lifter.

How can beginners start their fitness journey without feeling overwhelmed?

It’s all good, it’s not your fault, the fitness industry is just noisy. Keep in mind that it is an industry, and most of what we see online about fitness is marketing. That's not a bad thing; it just means there are a lot of competing voices trying to get your attention. But just because it’s noisy out there doesn’t mean working out and watching your diet is complicated.

The basics: simple but not easy. I’ll tell them to you, but you’re going to laugh because you already know

lift heavy stuff

get your heart rate up

get moving, walk, do fun stuff, play

be consistent

Be safe, ease in, and progress slowly

small wins and better habits stacked over time

We love to overcomplicate things; it's fun, and it sounds cool to talk about. There are so many ways to get results; at first, it doesn’t matter, forget about optimal, try stuff, find what you like, and be consistent. Be skeptical of sources that say they have the answer and everyone else is wrong. Or if they say they have a way to bypass time and hard work. Quick and easy sells, trying hard and doing the basics consistently over time do not. There are great coaches out there. Just remember, good information usually sounds kind of boring.

So now what?

Keep it simple and just work out.

do a bit of weights a few times a week

do a bit of cardio a few times a week

walk more

Eat mostly whole foods

Get out and do something fun with your body

ease in and progress over time

Remember that exercise is a signal you send to your body; the more frequent and stronger the signal is, the more your body is urged to adapt to it. Also, remember that your body needs rest. Because it is during that rest that the changes to your body occur. Good luck, you got this! And if your struggling to find the time or energy, remember that something is always better than nothing.
