Your muscles don’t know whether you’re fighting a tiger or curling a Thanksgiving turkey. Frozen or not.

They respond to mechanical tension.

And that’s kind of freeing.

The same goes for rep ranges. Heavy weights and low reps? Light weights and high reps?

For muscle growth, research generally shows that a pretty broad range of rep ranges can work similarly as long as the sets are sufficiently hard and the exercise is appropriate.

Five hard reps can produce a strong tension stimulus.

Thirty hard reps produce a smaller tension stimulus per rep, but you accumulate more reps.

Different roads. Similar destination.

No need to obsess over finding the one perfect exercise, rep range, or piece of equipment.

If you just want to get jacked, pick movements you can perform well, progressively overload, recover from, and actually enjoy doing.

Then train the damn things hard.

There are many ways to do an exercise. If the way you do a movement gives you the result you're aiming for, and you do the same technique, rep to rep, week to week, so you can track and progress, you are winning. We're not all built the same and we don't all train for the same goals. There isn't one perfect way to move.

Sometimes the route out of a mental state isn't another mental intervention. You can use your body to change the conditions your mind is operating under

If you work out at home and you're struggling with motivation and consistency, this might help.

You know who you are!... to the rest of ya...get in here!!! you could be one of us; join the fricken crew!!

It starts with belief. Most of us feel stuck, like we are doomed, doomed to get old, outta shape, and never be able to do the things we used to. We believe we are what we are, and we can't change. We put limits on what we are capable of. Stop it!! Start believing in growth, in change, and in yourself. See what happens.

Become Unreasonably Capable

Alright, I'm going to run this one while the weather lets me.

The idea is pretty simple: we're going to train to become unreasonably capable.

Lift heavy things. Carry heavy things. Run. Jump. Push. Pull. Move fast. Get strong. Get fit. Do things that are a little uncomfortable.

Yes, you'll probably build some muscle and drop some fat along the way, but that's not really the point. The point is becoming the kind of person who can handle s**t.

And since we're in Manitoba and apparently winter is inevitable, I'm going to run this while we still have decent weather. Maybe that's two months. Maybe we stretch it a little longer and start dressing for it. 😂

I'm not really sure what the format is going to look like yet.

Maybe it's one-on-one.

Maybe a few of us train together.

Maybe we do a bit of both.

Maybe it turns into a little community of people who want to get ridiculously capable together.

We'll figure it out.

If you're interested, let me know. You can jump in whenever and we'll figure out what makes sense for you.

I'll be running it regardless. Might as well come suffer with me

It's a slippery slope, folks!

Dig a Deeper Well

Most people think they want to lose weight, gain muscle, or fit into an old pair of jeans.

Those are goals, and they're good ones.

But underneath all of that, I think we're chasing something much simpler.

We want to feel good.

We want more energy.
More patience.
More resilience.
We want life to feel a little less heavy.

I don't think most people are lazy.

I think a lot of us are running on empty.

Imagine your physical, mental, and emotional energy as a well.

Everything draws from it.

Your job.
Your kids.
Your stress.
Poor sleep.
Anxiety.
Making decisions all day.
Pain.
Illness.

By the time evening rolls around, the well is almost dry.

You know the feeling.

Then someone tells you to "find more motivation."

The problem isn't always motivation.

Sometimes your well just isn't deep enough.

Here's the interesting part.

Strength training is hard.
Cardio is hard.

They require energy...
..yet people who do them consistently almost always say they have more energy.

Why?

Because they aren't just spending energy.

They're increasing their capacity.

You're building a bigger engine.

A stronger body is easier to live in.

A healthier heart makes everyday life feel less demanding.

The things that used to drain you don't take as much out of you anymore.

You're digging a deeper well.

I think that's what fitness is really about.

Not becoming someone else.

Removing the limitations that keep the person you already are from showing up.

The goal isn't to spend your life surviving each day.

It's to build enough capacity that you can actually enjoy it.

Dig a deeper well.
