Les Petits Amis de Macamilie is looking at starting a group of homeschoolers here in St. John's. I am a francophone and a language teacher. I have taught ESL and Spanish in Quebec and French in Newfoundland. I have had students of all ages and level. After being a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, I returned to teaching as a substitue teacher last year. I was horrified with what I saw in the schools:
- screen time during recess, and lunch time.
- limited outdoors and sports
- too many kids, not enough teachers, not enough help
- etc, I could go on and on.

As an experienced teacher, I would love to teach your children through projects of all sorts.

I have so much material, so many fun ideas. I am so eager to going back to teaching, but not in the school system that we know today.

Even if your child has no French or Spanish background, do not worry about a language barrier. Being exposed to a second language for little ones is like being introduced to a new song. Sure, it might startle them at first if they are over 3, but it won’t be long before they start speaking the language themselves. Just like a new song on the radio, hear it a few times and you quickly learn and know the lyrics by heart.

Here are some advantages of learning a second/third language early on:

- Children tend to learn faster and easier;
- Their creativity and problem solving skills are usually more advanced;
- It improves cognitive flexibility and executive functioning;
- They score higher in tests;
- They have better and more advanced reading skills;
- They’ll have a better self esteem;
- Learning a second and third language flexes brain muscles thus improves memory, speech and sensory perception, information processing;
- Children get a bigger and better view of the world;
- It allows them to have a greater grasp of their first language, ending up with more and richer vocabulary.

Let us also not forget that our country is bilingual and thus, speaking both English and French is a must and will enhance the career opportunities later on in life.
