It has been a good week at the MHA. In addition to History 3840 (Historical Methods, Dr. Jeff Webb) students who are poring over old passenger liner crew agreements for their term paper project, we have also been fortunate to host a research team from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Porto. Alice Nouvet, Neftalí Sillero, and Rafael Sousa Santos are part of the ERC-funded project, Fishing Architecture, examining how the industrialization of North Atlantic fisheries affected marine ecosystems, and the role that architecture played in that process. We have enjoyed working with them to find archival documents that support their research.

🚨Drifting Smoke Alert 🚨

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is advising residents that the Kingston wildfires are causing drifting smoke into St. John’s and surrounding areas. As a result, a special air advisory has been issued for the St. John’s metro region this morning.

Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off air exchangers and HVAC units that draw air from outside to help reduce indoor smoke exposure. Please contact 811 or see a health-care provider if you experience any concerning symptoms related to smoke exposure such as a severe cough, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and/or wheezing.

Honoured to visit beautiful Grand Falls Windsor to help unveil a statue honouring my old pal Gordon Pinsent on what would have been his 95th birthday. Bravo on another masterwork. Love you Gordon.
