MUN MED PEI Students

Last week we were so lucky to be able to travel to Newfoundland for the first time to meet the rest of our cohort! We had an amazing time meeting our peers in person and exploring St. John’s.

Meet Hailey!
Hailey is our Vice President of Wellness and our Gathering Rounds Lead.
She is from Charlottetown and did a BSc in Biology and Honours English and a Master’s in Romantic and Victorian Literature. Her favourite part of medical school so far has been getting to go back to school (and learning that an apple a day DOES NOT keep the doctor away).

Today students explored the Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre where we will have the chance to practice clinical skills before encountering them in real-world scenarios.

Happy Black History Month! 🖤✨

This month, we’ve been celebrating by digging a little deeper into Black history right here in Atlantic Canada. 

We’re excited to share excerpts from “More Than We Were Told: Black History in Atlantic Canada”, a student’s reflections on some of the stories and histories we’ve been learning about this month.

From the powerful story of Lanier Phillips in Newfoundland to the history of The Bog on PEI, this piece highlights resilience, community, and the ways history continues to shape health, trust, and care today.

As medical learners, understanding these stories helps us become better listeners, stronger advocates, and more thoughtful future physicians.

Meet Lauren!
Lauren is one of our Social reps, PEI Family Medicine interest group reps, Federation of Medical Women in Canada interest group reps, Internal Medicine interest group reps, and Sunsense Program PEI executives. She is booked and busy!
Lauren is from Mermaid and studied Human Biology before starting medical school. Her favourite thing about medical school is the support system around us that ensures any questions are answered and address any concerns we may have.

Way to go team! This week as part of kindness week, learners went down to Canadian Blood Services to donate blood!

Meet Colin!
Colin is from Montague and, before starting medical school, did a BSc in Kinesiology and worked in provincial politics.

His favourite thing about medical school so far is the great group of classmates and getting to know/shadow local physicians!

We have been hiding long enough and would like to formally introduce you to our class!

Starting off with Sydney!
Sydney is one of our PEI Family Medicine interest group reps and lounge and locker rep for our class.
Sydney grew up in Georgetown and studied psychology before starting medical school. Her favourite thing about medical school so far is “the opportunity to have clinical experiences be a part of our learning and curriculum”.

Be Yourself: Authenticity goes a long way. Let your values, experiences, and personality shine.
Stay Grounded: Interviews can be nerve-wracking. Take a breath, stay present, and trust your preparation.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Being well rested helps you think clearly and communicate your best answers, especially in an MMI.
Dress Professionally: Medicine is a professional field. Dress in a way that reflects respect for the program and for yourself.
Be Proud of Yourself: An interview invitation is a huge accomplishment. You were selected because they see your potential to become an excellent physician. Use this opportunity to show them they were right.

Students this semester are fortunate enough to be able to participate in ambulance ride along shifts through Island EMS to learn more about what paramedics do and how essential their work is to a successful healthcare system
