Witset Indigenous Early Years Liaison Working with Families 0-6 In response, the Indigenous Early Years Liaison Worker position was created to support children ages 0–6 and their families.

The Wit’suwit’en Child and Family Centre identified a need for additional support to help families access essential health, developmental, and educational services during the early years. Guided by our mission of building healthier families for a healthier tomorrow, this role supports families through collaboration, advocacy, and culturally respectful connections to services that promote healthy development and well-being. Our goals are to build strong, trusting relationships with Indigenous families, support culturally safe and welcoming early years environments, and promote the holistic development and well-being of Indigenous children. Through collaboration with community partners and a commitment to ongoing learning and reflection, we work to create coordinated, respectful, and effective supports for families. Family & Home Supports
Home visits
Parenting supports
Nutritional support
Transportation assistance
Support finding child care
Advocacy & Navigation
Advocacy support for families
Liaison between families and supportive organizations
Support attending appointments (health care, doctor visits, counselling, etc.) Child Development Supports
Individual child development planning
Developmental assessment supports in collaboration with Northwest Child Development Centre
Early identification of developmental needs
Education & Workshops
Educational workshops and supports may include:
Infant massage
Prenatal and postnatal information
FASD support and education
AD/HD support and education

Transportation support is available for families who do not have access to a vehicle. This includes assistance getting to and from medical appointments, early learning programs, school meetings, community services, and other essential supports. Similar to community-based outreach models such as CCRR, this service helps reduce barriers, improve access to care, and ensure families can participate fully in programs that support their child’s health, development, and education. Transportation support is coordinated in collaboration with families and community partners, based on availability and need.

Sharing a resource to help connect with your children

“How was school?” often gets a one-word answer: “Fine.”

But a child can have had a brilliant moment, a friendship wobble, a hard lesson, a playground worry, or something they are really proud of, all in the same day.

Sometimes a small change in the question opens the door.

Try asking:
“What made you laugh today?”
“Who did you spend time with?”
“What was the hardest bit?”
“Did anything feel unfair?”
“What are you proud of?”

You do not need to turn every afternoon into a big chat. One gentle question in the car, over dinner or at bedtime can let a child know you are there to listen, even when they do not have the words straight away.
