Despite sexist reimaginings and the rampant sexism of the age, medieval records list women as laborers in all trades, from cathedral builders to wool merchants.

Here's a historical account of women who've smithed.

People would look surprised and say, “But…you can’t be a girl. You’re a blacksmith!"

Folks have been asking if Camp CREATE is gonna happen this summer and I have been non-committal about dates and hesitant to take on the bulk of the coordination. If there are people who are into sharing the load of helping make sure this event can happen again, please be in touch. I am hoping to either have a meeting or start delegating categories of jobs in the next month. And setting a date.

The thing about DIY car repairs, is that fixing one problem can often open (or bring to the surface) another in the process. Working on Fredrick the Forester this week has been a testament and reminder to that fact. If you are interested in participating in the next stage of the ongoing brake repairs (a brake bleed), come on by. It's looking like it'll be a tomorrow project. This is a great way to get to know and understand the way that your cars' brakes keep you safe on the road.

If you are coming to camp and you don't exactly where you are headed to just know that you can head just south of Slocan City Village, between Lindsay and Copeland. Theres some signs, call ELK-BUZZ for clarification if needed.

Just so folks are in the know and prepared as possible, we have been seeing almost daily afternoon/evening humidity break thunderstorms. Make sure to bring tarps, boots, rain gear, camp chairs etc. Other things that we could sure use for camp infrastructure (mostly to borrow) involve plywood pieces of various sizes, tables, propane burning camp stoves, yard + hand tools like shovels, hammers and other wise useful things. Offerings to the kitchen are also things to come with and ideas or arrangements of gardens and farms to send gleaning crews to. It's all coming together. Excited to see y'all soon!

Great news! Kat from Four Nations Coalition of Indigenous Medicines will be helping us get camp started off on the right foot. She will be leading a 3 hr session for adult campers starting at 5pm SHARP on Sunday evening. This session will introduce (or re familiarize) folks with the territory we are camping on (of the Sinixt Nation) and share with us some of the protocols that have been practised in this place for the past 12,000+ years. Dinner will be served just before the session starts. Please make sure you are here on time for this- participating in a session like this has been laid out as the pre-requisite for our skill sharing in this territory by Marilyn James, spokesperson for the Sinixt.

Camp is staring in 5 days! While we are getting ready we are also aware of the tailing ponds spills, ongoing attempts to expand pipeline and mining development, extreme police state actions in Ferguson and around the world. Coming together is about creating a way of life outside of these broken systems and helping ease our transition away from dependence on them. I am really looking forward to a week of great conversations, incredible learning opportunities, heart pulsing magic and so much fun and gratitude to be in such a place together.

Hey folks. Camp is near approaching! Yesterday I had the excellent opportunity to hear Mel Bazil from the Unistoten Camp talk about Free Prior and Informed Consent Protocols. This and lots of great conversations with folks who are interested to come to camp for a shorter period of time than the full week has really got my brain juices flowing around how 'open' the camp will be, and how that will be communicated and navigated. This conversation is a big one, around access, and also creating and maintaining safe space. We are still operating from a place where the people who are here will get to decide and draft what sort of arrangement they feel most comfortable by. If you are hoping to come to camp as a late-comer or a visitor, please stay tuned to this page as it will be where we will outline protocol + expectations for guests to camp once we have drafted it.

Check your inboxes registered campers- details are there for you.

Important pre-camp communications will be going out to registered campers this week. If you haven't registered yet, now's the time. If the form is intimidating or inaccessible to you and you would like to complete a registration over the phone, let's make it happen. Spread the word to interested friends who might not be on the internet. Call ELK-BUZZ to register, complete the form on eventbrite (lots of links below) OR email [email protected]. Lots' of ways to get registered, but if you wanna come to camp, we gotta get in the same loop. -Thanks!

Filling out a registration through our eventbrite helps us know what we are doing site prep for. Camp is going to be largely co-created and infrastructure will depend on who's coming, what your needs are, what skills and interests you bring and what you hope to take away. This is what the registration process is for; if you have been considering - now is the time... camp is only a month and a couple days away.

If you have attempted to access the registration in the past weeks and it seemed impossible, have no fear. I fixed it. Y...

If you have attempted to access the registration in the past weeks and it seemed impossible, have no fear. I fixed it. You can now register for camp through this:

Camp @ CREATE. is a summer camp experience for individuals and families of all sorts. It's built up around ideas of democratic community engagement, low-tech/low-impact solutions, co-creation, and inclusion. Programming offered at camp will largely depend on the skills, knowledge and gift offerings…
