Day 17 of 28 Days of Dementia Awareness 💙

People living with dementia are not giving you a hard time.
They are having a hard time.

Behind many behaviours is often confusion, fear, frustration, overstimulation, memory loss, or difficulty communicating needs and emotions.

This is why patience, reassurance, compassion, and person-centred care matter so much in dementia support.

As healthcare workers, caregivers, family members, and community members, we all have the ability to create safer and more supportive environments for people living with dementia.

Sometimes a calm voice, kindness, eye contact, or simple reassurance can completely change someone’s day.

Let’s continue building communities rooted in empathy, dignity, understanding, and compassionate care. 💙

Day 16 of 28 Days of Dementia Awareness 💜

BUILDING CONNECTION THROUGH VOLUNTEERING

One of the most meaningful things we can give someone living with dementia is our time, patience, and presence. Even small moments of connection can brighten someone’s day in ways we may never fully realize.

Volunteering is not only about helping others. It is also about learning compassion, building communication skills, gaining confidence, and becoming part of a supportive community.

To all students and future healthcare workers, remember this:
Some of the most valuable skills in healthcare cannot be learned from a textbook alone. They are learned through kindness, listening, empathy, and human connection.

The Alzheimer Society of BC & Yukon offers volunteer opportunities that help support individuals living with dementia and their families. If this is something you are passionate about, I encourage you to explore it. 💜

Your time. Your heart. Their lives.

Anti-Racism and Awareness Week is an important reminder that every person deserves to feel respected, valued, safe, and included. 💜

As an educator, I have the privilege of meeting students from many different cultures, backgrounds, languages, and life experiences. Many individuals come to Canada carrying hopes, dreams, and the courage to build a better future for themselves and their families.

No one should ever feel judged, excluded, or treated unfairly because of their accent, culture, religion, skin colour, or where they come from.

Learning environments, workplaces, and healthcare settings should be spaces of compassion, understanding, dignity, and respect for all people.

We may come from different backgrounds, but kindness and humanity connect us all.

Let’s continue listening.
Let’s continue learning.
Let’s continue standing up for one another.

Different backgrounds. Shared humanity. Stronger together. 💜
